Line breeding Good or Bad
I have heard people so the only way to get the traits you want is to line breed. Growing up most of the oldtimers were looking for new blood to breed to. They used to say it made a better heather hound. I have some good female and I am going to breed them next year. So should I start line breeding my hounds or look for a new cross? Thanks Jody
If you like what's already in your dog and are satisfied, then there's no reason to introduce new blood. Now if there is something you do not like about your dog, or something you like in another line of dogs that you want, then you should breed out. Just all in what you want in your dogs AND breeding is no exact science. It's hard to tell what you will get until the cross has been made.

out crossing
Out cross to somthing simular to what you have and if you like the results come back to your Gean pool and cross back to a Half Brother or Grand mother , personaly id stay away from Bro & sis and cross to father Daughters or Grand father to grand daughter.
jmop mother to son is ok, that may be too close for some but it works .
I like and have seen good results with an uncle x niece crosses
Line breeding and out crossing are simply tools. Like any other tools you can use them properly or misuse them.
You should never use a wrench as a hammer, and if you do you shouldn't blame the wrench for the bent nail.

on the ball Larry...
I personally have been line breeding for almost 25 years. I have found also that after about 3 generations back from a particular dog, you don't see much similarities in that original dog. If you have a great granddaughter to a particular dog and you breed her to a a great grandson of that same dog, I don't see traits of that old dog show up. Not enough to say you are still line breeding. Just my opinion.
I have outcrossed once during that time, but that dog was Spring Creek Radar and he made your bloodline better no matter what you were breeding to him. I have continued to add his bloodline wherever possible even though it is way back there on most dogs pedigrees.
He had all the smame charactaristics I was breeding for as well,
so even though it was an outcross, I was still breeding for the same qualities:
Balanced on track and tree
Loud Mouths
Intelligence
Easy to train
Easy to break if needed
Beautiful to look out and have the ability to show at a high level.
25 years later and my dogs still have the same desired traits.
The last cross I made is now 8 months old and they are everything I just listed.
good line breeding will do that for you if you have patience and willing to put in the time,,money and effort.

if you study your bloodlines and she what would possibley improve the breed then cross breeding is ok. line-breeding pretty much keeps everything in the family...kinda like people from winston county alabama...lol!!!you can have fixed traits but if you make one mess up you could have a bad litter of pups. it all depends on the breeder and the traits of both dogs!

Thanks for all the post. Very helpful. Jody
Line breed untill you are getting to close. Sometime or another an outcross will be needed.
I really think line breeding is the way to go most times. But then you'll hear of that special outcross thats just excellent.

Good Advice
Almost everyone is saying the same thing: Line breeding is the best tool to use, if you know how to use it. Watch the good traits you want in your line. Breed the same good traits to the same good traits. Watch even closer for the bad traits, NEVER breed the same bad traits. Out-cross on simular traits, but different bloodlines. KNOW the close records and traits of your out-crosses. KNOW AND STUDY ALL THE TRAITS of each dog used in your line breeding. Remember it will take 3 or 4 generations to get a good fixed line of dogs, AND only one generation to mess up and have to back up a step or two.
Rule-of-thumb: Not too close, one generation apart. Aunt to nephew, Uncle to neice, Cousin to cousin, Grand-son to grand-mother, or Grand=father to grand-daughter.
Good luck, because there is a lot of luck needed, especially when you first start.
