Anyone a Vet Here

My vet said my dogs kidneys readings are really elevated. Same symptoms as drinking antifreeze. No possible way he could have gotten into antifreeze. What am I to expect. Is there hope or not. THe vet said his test couldnt read the levels because they were so high. Another reason he gave was a possible bug.

could be lepto, do you hunt around stagnet swamp water. thats a likely place to get it. there are so many strains of lepto, vaccines only cover a few..oh i'm not a vet, but have had a couple dogs get lepto.

Just a thought

I have been told that feeding to high of protein will do damage to their kidneys. I always thought the higher the better, until my vet told me they can have kidney failure or kidney burn out from to much protein in their diet. Make sure your dog has plenty of water too.

No, I'm not a vet, I don't even play one on TV. Just a gal who has been around animals all my life & learned a bit, is all.

Well the vet was treating him for dehydration, got him eating and drinking by giving him fluids under the skin. Thought he was ready to come home then checked his blood and his kidney readings were really elevated. Now I dont know what he is trying for the kidneys. I am feeding high protein food so I may have to mention that to the vet. He is a male about 4-5 years old.

I am a vet and have found that if the Phosphorus levels are higher than 10-12 it is almost impossible for the dog to recover even with intense treatment with IV fluids in the hospital. The other blood values to look at are BUN and Creatinine, if these levels are greater than twice the normal levels the prognosis for survival is very grave. I wish you luck, Renal failure is a very difficult disease to treat once it has gotten bad.

sending thoughts and prayers

for your hound and for you. I sure hope it is not kidney failure or kid. disease. I am currently living with my old greyhound in the beginnings of kidney disease, "treated" with diet.... He is stabilised but the old mans days are fewer than I'd like.
Yours is a younger dog so I'm hopeful that you don't have a problem like that.
I'm sorry your dog is sick and hope he recovers fully,
SIncerely, Heather
