Here's a rule question for ya???
Actually 2 questions, both of these actually happened on seperate casts I was on years past.
Question one....Dog is declared struck and treed, when we arrive we see this dog barking on a coon that has "appeared to be dead for sometime" Are his strike points plussed? Deleted? Or Minused?
Question two, two dogs were struck and treed together. Cast arrives and both hounds are handled and tied to the tree. Cast gets in position to score. Judge says to shine, fight breaks out at bottom of tree where dogs are tied. Closer look shows dogs fighting a coon that apparently has climbed down from tree. Plus them both ways or just strike? I'll let you answer this one then later tell you what happens after we score the situation....

I seem to rember both of these questions discussed on here at one time or another...
1.I dont think you can score on a dead coon.
2. Plus the strike only.
If the dog was barking at a dead coon on the ground I think you have to plus the strike because without an autopsy you can't prove she didn't kill the coon

I'll put my 2 cents in-
1.- Cannot score a dead coon.
2. - Plus it, You said shine time had started- you seen the coon during the ten minutes. dogs didnt "catch coon". Dogs were handled. Plus it.

If you can score on a old dead coon, then I think i'm gonna lay some dead coons in my woods and show my dog where they are, then guide at a hunt. Should be easy. Thanks for the tip

1.) Like already said you can't score a dead coon.
2.) No one witnessed the coon coming out of the tree the dogs treed on since you said "apparently". Shine the tree and see what you find, if there's a coon there plus'm both ways.

I cant seem to find anywhere in the rule books that it says no score on a dead coon.
3. POINTS WILL BE PLUS:
(a) When dogs strike and tree and coon is seen: (1) by a non-hunting Judge, or (2) by a majority of the cast when hunting Judge is used.
Question number 2, I would say plus both strike and tree if shine time has started when you see the coon.

cant score on the dead coon
strike points only on the caught coon.
Ok so lets say you here a dog catch a coon and when you get there the dog is just barking at the coon and it is DEAD.
I understand not scoring and old rotten dead coon but sometimes in the winter time it could be hard to tell

Just my two cents
1. Score it. plus strike and tree. Rules say coon nothing about dead or alive.
2. Plus strike only.
What do you think Todd

PLUSIT
YOU WOULD PLUS THE HOUNDS STRIKE POINTS.SECOND PLUS THERE STRIKE.COONS WHERE ON THE GROUND AND THEY WHERE SEEN.BUT JUDGE AND CAST SHOULD USE COMMON SENCE IF THE COON IN QUESTION 1 WAS STIFF AND APPEARED A LONG TIME DEAD.
I am not an idiot and think you could probably tell if a dog caught a coon or if it has been dead for days but I think that in certain situations you could score a dead coon.
I was in a cast once when a dog ran a hot coon in a cornfield we heard a coon squall and a few minutes later she came to us carrying a dead kitten coon. We plussed her strike. Are you trying to tell me she didn't deserve it. If that's the case I guess she should have been minused for quitting a track

If the coon is dead before you score it, it can not be plussed. Tough break but that is the rules.

I'm telling you if I was in shelbyville and I drew you or anyone else out and there dog come in with a dead coon it would not get scored on my cast. IF the master of hounds over ruled it then it would go to UKC. The purpose of the rule is to keep from getting road kill coon and so on. But unless you see it alive first it does not count. No different then a coon coming down the tree and only getting strike if the dog caught it. You know the coon came down the tree. But you have to go by the rules and only plus strike.

I am not talking about a three day dead coon I am talking about a fresh killed coon
