it just part of training a coondog.

I'll tell you about the year old we have and what we're doing.
He's a choice pup we kept out of a litter of kane pups.
He is a natural born tree dog who is looking to get treed. When he was 7 months old he split 100 yards from the old dogs, had the coon, old dogs were slick..we let him tree for 30 minutes by himself while the other dogs were doing the same.
We started taking him by himself 3 times a week and he was doing pretty good other than being about 40% accurate. When he'd miss, we tell him "it's not there" in a firm voice and encourage him to go on and find the right tree. Sometimes it'd be a bad track or for whatever reason simply couldn't find the right tree. He's only went back to a tree he originally slicked on once & with firm correction he has never went back to any again.
He likes to have the coon even wants to have it.He's now a year old and a little over 60% accurate. Last night he missed, we sent him on and he found the coon 30 yards from where he originally treed. We've noticed when Flex gives a high-pitch locate it's usually a slick, the long deep locate he has the coon. I think this little hound has the heart to be something special and will before long be 80% or better accurate.Come spring he'll be in the hunts as a measuring stick and I'm certain he'll do well.
We try to end every hunt on a positive note so Flex has that experience on his brain instead of something else. So far it's worked for us.
Be patient and try to do what you believe is right & I believe it will rub off on your young dog. Hope this is of help for you and Good Luck.

James, If he slick's on you again, just cut you a fishing pole or two, and wear them out on him. tell him to sic em jack, get him fuzzy.
Get you a good black dog. lol

I'll get a kean willow limp and treat him like a kid with his hand caught in the candy dish if the fishing pole isn't handy.
lol
As for the off-breeds....we get a mouthful of marbles everytime we turn these no-account spotted dogs loose. Every time they boo-hoo,straddle a track, tree a opposum, bay armadillos, never get deeper than 1/4 mile while hunting etc. we spit out a marble.
As of now...we have ALL our marbles
...however, once we lose ALL our marbles we'll switch off the hybrid beagles.
ive just never had a young dog do that, lol,,,he is sort of peculiar--i seem to have a thing with peculiar dogs, i like it---but i do not want to have this pup turn into his momma,,,get through the country type of dog,,,ive had my fair share with them kind, lol---this pup likes to get off by himself, but he hunts out a woods before he dicides to "GO"
