Training curs?

Like I said earlyer I'm new to curs and night hunting. I've had beagles for years and have had dogs most my life. I bought a 15mo old mountian cur a mouth ago off this forum and I love him. We had him and a 3 year old walker out to night. My dog hit a track and the walker joined. They made a big circle, too big! We think it may have been a fox. the walker is good about not running deer,but fox we don't know. We walked across a deer latter and he didn't act interested. But like I said my pup started it. now I've been told that cur are not like hounds. And you cann't use a heavy hand or a switch. I was told a stern voice is enough. How do you all break your curs off fox and other off game. And I'll add that I don't have a shock collar. And he is lightly started. and doing good on coon. Thanks in advance John.

Don't get rough with a cur dog. Just drop some coon down to him and hunt him by himself. When you run more than one dog, they get competitive and will do things they normally wouldn't do alone. Once he's treeing target game well, then you can put him with other dogs. Once a cur figures out that he can't catch a fox, he won't run them anymore.

FPJ, not all Mt. Curs fit the "typical" profile. Some show little interest in fast game, some will break themselves or with scolding as they mature and some must be broke using a method other than a strong voice. They are intelligent hunting dogs but the prey drive side of the brain will override the intelligent side of some lol.

I suppose it's up to a dog's owner how many times running fast game is enough but at 18( maybe sooner)months and beyond the questions may be, is it becoming the dog's permanent mind set and do you consider it frustrating.

I gaurantee many a Mt. Curdog has sported an E-Collar. The proper use of one may be the easiest method to break a dog that "NEEDS" it, for both the dog and the owner.

----All Cur Dog Breeds are different, so I am told. Strains within breeds are also different---some silent on track---some semi and some are Open----some even have a Bawl Mouth---some Cur Dogs With A Bawl Mouuth????????? 25 years ago---if you said that--you would be laughed off this site????
I only know about my Dogs----they will stop running fast game when they start treeing--If they ever do run it to begin with---some don't. If they can not have the reward of treeing it----catching it or Baying it--they soon loose interest---they must have that reward. On the other hand---cross them with a strain of gritty July dogs and they will catch everything they run----deer----Fox or Coyotes. My B-M Curs run anything to catch it and they catch it in order to Kill it---But cross them with Jul---I have 5 crosses--they give me much pleasure sitting in my yard and you've got a suped up run to catch dog. We have many fox and deer, and a few yotes---I keep them killed out to an extent--will tell you how if you Call Me. H.C.-----------

Sounds like we are getting a good debate going. curdog10 sounds interesting on the yotes. I was down in north Miss a few years ago and I think we have moore road than you all or I'd be real interested. pm me. John

imop , i think if you would just let the cur hunt and do what comes natural he would be ok, the Hound is the diffrent story, the hound dosent have the sence to please you like the cur would so, letting the cur Run the fox would be fine just dont encourage it bye praising him for it. catch your dog on the track and leash him asap, turn him alose again in a diffrent place where you know there are Coons or Sq, if and when he trees either , act and treat him like he won the Wourld Championship and he will catch on pretty quick, provided he is a tipical moutain cur, Kemmers seem be the easyest iv seen to train this way . jmop
