Coonhound Paralysis

I have a German Shepard that has contracted this and was wondering if anyone could help me out as far as what to expect. She has had it around 2 weeks now and I would like to know if anyone has ideas to help her through this other than the TLC and physical therapy we are giving her.

I had a dog come down with this and the vet gave him steriods and high protien food. Took about a month and he came out of it.

The vet gave my hound prednisone. She's had CDP twice. Jessica

jessica,eric, i am dealing with this in a hound right now. most recommend no steroids. prednisone is a steroid,correct?

I have never seen this in a dog what are the symptons of this ?

( It"s nice to have a tree dog but the name of the game is to have a coon in the tree ! )

usually

it starts with the dog loosing its voice, then starts to lose its body functions. then goes down till it has a hard time picking its head up.. the main concern is getting food and water in the dog and keep moving it to prevent pnemonia.. they will often come out of it in a couple weeks. just takes alot of TLC..

mark brown is south carolina has a black and tan male that had it and he is now a nite ch there is hope for them just stick with it

if a dog

comes down with it, it will get it again. so make sure every coon you give the dog is dead before it gets ahold of it.. and pray it does not catch one on the ground..

had a dog that was part redbone and shepard that got it after fighting one of the best sows coon i ever saw . took him to the vet he gave him a bunch of shots and take him home and feed and water him . he was better in about 2 weeks . his voice was fine and was in good shape what was wrong with him was he got down in his hind quaters they would not work he had to drag it around when it moved . he got back to walking around in about 2 weeks or so. after it was said and done he was never like he was before .

this dog is not showing signs of loss of voice. just very wobbly in the hindquarters so far. wondered at first if it was a groin pull? or backor hip issues? but is looking more like coonhound paralysis. he is on day three allready and still able to move himself around enough to go to bathroom,etc. eating if i juice up his meal. for others dealing with this there are several other threads with helpful info.

truly might want to think about Lyme disease, as I think it can cause some mobility issues. CDP usually makes em loose their voice, they sound hoarce. Prednisone is a steroid, the vets around here seem to use it for everything. From all I have read on CDP it just has to run its course. They can and will get it again, so I have to be real careful with my female. My female and her half brother fought the same coon she got it he didn't. About 2 weeks after the coon fight my female had a slight limp and was hoarce, in the next few days she could barely walk and looked like somebody threw black and white fur over a skeleton. Jessica

Coondog Paralysis

I once had a Black & Tan that came down with this. He lost control of his hind legs. That was the only thing I noticed about this disease. And, he did make a full recovery! This was about 30 years ago. I've not seen it since then.

If he is down in the back end it is more than likely paralysis.
Had a black dog when I was a kid get it twice. Like stated earlyer make shure he don't get bit again. Took a couple weeks both times my vet gace cortazone shots once a day till he was better. But I think it just has to run it's cource.

he is showing the hoarse voice now, so i do think it is cdp. he did have lymes this fall and had a full recovery from that[antibiotics for 14 days]. was back to 100% for a month then in one hour of hunting it hit hard. he did have a particularly tough fight with a coon about 10 days earlier that wouldnt climb a tree. they fought hard in a cattail swamp for ten or more minutes. he got bit pretty good . i am assuming that is the contact and that it is cdp. he is mobile ,eating and drinking, had a b.m. today,just very stiff and wobbly. i think keeping liquids in him is gonna be the biggest challenge.

had 2 dogs get it . one got it twice. they come out of it in a couple of weeks. need to make sure they eat and drink. once they get it they are more apt to get it again, ..........comes from a coon bight that carries. some dogs won't get it.

Keep in mind they develop NO immunity from it and usually the second go round is worse. Jessica

Years ago I had one that came down with CDP, the second time killed him.

Ben, What symptoms did you have with cowboy when he had lymes?

josh, he was up with cliff ladue for a few weeks. cliff and bob said he was wobbly on the hind legs, and just not moving well. was being outtracked by dogs that shouldnt have outtracked him. they took him to the vet,bloodwork confirmed lyme's. put on antibiotics, he recovered in twenty four hours. cliff kept him laid up for two more weeks just in case. then i started hunting him and i couldnot see any weakness. is a bit odd to have lymes and then cdp 8 weeks later. he has been hunted hard and maybe a little run down. oh they said his voice was a littlle off when he had the lymes. but this did set in fast. he looked good at 7 and not at 8:30. i originally thought strained muscle or ligaments.

for anyone interested, cowboy is stable. he never got so bad as that he could not walk,or go to the bath on his own. i have been slow cooking steaks with beef bullion in the crock pot,so he is eating well. he isnt drinking much, and i am a little concerned about that, but the food is very moist that he eats, and he is urinating at least 4 times a day and it is not too yellow. i have been keeping him on the sofa so he is very comfy and warm, has a little challenge getting up on there by himself. he appears a little better moving tonight his sixth night since symptoms began. probably gonna get lucky and have full recovery. no meds administered. he hasnt tried to bark for 3 days so i dont know about his voice, but right now i would say he just looks stiff and rather feeble, no other sympoms. wants to hunt when i load other dogs. thanks for all who advised , and for anyone researching this topic do a search on this forum for coon hound paralysis [ space between words] for more helpful tips. good luck.

Glad he's doin better!!! Its soooo hard to watch them go through this.
