Dog With a Cough
My Jebb dog started coughing these last couple of days. Not real bad, but enough to scare me. It got chilly kind of quick on us here and I'm hoping it's just a cold. Should I be more worried? He's in otherwise great condition and is UTD on all his Heartworm Prevention (I use Ivermectin Paste)...Is it possible for a dog to get a cold? He hasn't been exposed to any new dogs in the past couple of weeks so I don't think it is kennel cough.

Call the vet and get advice...
...at his age, with a cough I would have a vet visit and let them listen to his lungs. I know how you guys feel about him and I would spend the $ if you have it to check it out. A "cold" in an older dog can become serious quickly but can also be a treatable thing. Weather changes certainly effect us more as time goes by and we get OLD. SOmetimes a cough is nothing to worry about but I'd let the vet take a listen.
Hope it's nothing but the weather changes, Heather

Some common causes of coughing and gagging include foreign objects in the airway, bronchitis, bacterial pneumonia, heart disease, laryngeal paralysis, fungal infections, reflux esophagitis (similar to heartburn in people), food allergies, parasites, tumors, and other diseases.
found this on a website. coughs are not always easy to diagnosis in dogs. Can be so many things making it cough, i would suggest letting the vet determine what's going on. Dont want to let it get worse and could be some other stuff going on with the dog. Good luck with this.

If the cough worstens, I will definitly take him to the vet. I am taking no chances with this ole guy. I did some research this morning and I'm pretty positive that it's not kennel cough. His symptoms seem more like he inhaled something while hunting, or has a cold.
We hunted him Sunday night and he wasn't coughing at all, that was before I noticed him doing anything. He treed hard and was fine afterwards--no coughing. Then, Monday morning, he coughed a few times. Then I heard him again in the afternoon, and again that night. It's just a few coughs each episode. And, it's not a hacking cough, and no fluids are coming up. Tuesday didn't seem as bad, and then today I only heard him cough a few times. He did sneeze a few times today. I also gave the dogs fresh straw yesterday, not thinking that it would affect him. I think this may have something to do with it as well. He is still very active and not at all sluggish or depressed.
Earthgirl, I read the same thing on several websites when I googled "coughing dog"....Seems like a tricky thing to diagnose and will leave it to a vet.

Coughing
There are also a couple of other things that can cause a dog to cough that you likely won't find on a 'pet vet' site. There is what some people call a 'training cough' - generally when an out of condition dog over-exerts himself, or exerts himself beyond his conditioning. It is a dry, single cough or two, and it's off-and-on, not a steady cough. It is caused by irritation in the bronchioles (the smallest little branches of the lungs), and generally resolves itself within a couple of days without treatment. Don't know if it would occur in coonhounds, but it's not uncommon in sighthounds, and more common in older dogs that haven't been conditioned more gradually (I find my older dogs require more work to condition than the younger ones).
The second is a 'cold cough', from heavy exertion in very cold weather (it hasn't been cold enough for that yet!) - both people and dogs can suffer from it - when the temperature is in the 'fast frostbite' range, heavy sudden exertion can trigger an immediate cough, that can sometimes last for a couple of days. Basically, the deep breathing that comes with exertion will bring the very cold air into the bronchioles faster then it can be warmed up by the larger branches of the lungs, and the shock of it causes the cough. This too, resolves itself without treatment.
You can give dogs childrens cough syrup if the cough is severe.

My Mom's CockaPoo was to the vet this week for a severe cough. Sounds to me like the "heart worm" cough. Vet said it was kennel cough. Dang dog has never been in a kennel?! I guess it's just a cold, but antibiotics for 5 days still has not cleared it up at all.

It wasn't confirmed to be kennel cough. The vet really couldn't find a cause behind the caugh without doing bloodwork and x-rays. He doesn't have any nasal discharge or anything. Jebb will go back if the cough keeps up though....
