whats the biggest coyote youve seen?

sat night me and the wife turned our 2 female black n tans loose. the younger one opened qwik worked the track for about 2 minutes then started to what sounded like locating. then my older female opened when all the sudden we heard a bad fight. at first i thought are 2 dogs where fighting at the tree but after about 5 minutes my older female came back with slobber all over her. then we heard the younger dog fighting again so i started towards her when i seen 2 sets of eyes coming towards me. our female was trotting right behind a coyote with her tail in the air like she just beat the world. the coyote was bigger then her and she is a tall 60 pd female. the yote got about 60 yards from me before it turned and headed up the hill. our young female had deep bites in her side. it freaked me out that a coyote would fight 2 dogs at once and never seen one that big before. scary thinking there is little kids around.

I saw 5 in a field here close to home, but they were a hundred yards off or so. I have heard guys around here saying that they can reach 85 pounds or so. Just haven't seen them close enough to get a good gauge on their actual size.

i always thought they where about 45 pds but this one looked to be about 70 to 75 pds. most look skinny and under feed but this one was fat and healthy lol.

My dogs have not yet gotten into a fight with any coyotes but we've come close. Last night I caught a coyote following me out of the woods. My dog was off hunting elsewhere at the time. I doubt they'd ever confront a person. Still it's a bit disturbing to know they are following you around.

it probably was a red wolf coyote cross we have lots of them around here and they have been dna tested by ec and found to carry genes from the red wold
the coyote can not cross wirh a dog as noriginaly thought a red wolf can cross with a dog or yote but a yote ca only cross wite a red wolf

Im pretty sure a dog and coyote can cross...everynow and then we get black ones running around here and that is from a dog cross

Coyotes can cross with dogs. I know of a horse rancher that raises border collies and he has a couple coyote collie crosses.

Coyotes and dogs can an do cross but most of the time the offspring will be sterile( if not the first generation the second geration most always is, that is why you still see pure coyotes. Something about the differance in cromezones? we killed a55lb. or 65lb. one time and it was huge.

rick we where hunting in the same spot a week earlier. when we was walkin into the tree we had something that seemed to be following us about 50 yards in the woods. now we kind of think it may have been a yote. we dont have wolves around here but this yote was a big one. there is alot of yotes around here cause i hear them all the time but this is the closest ive been so far. last year a elderly woman and a young kid where both bite in a cleveland ohio park. so it kind of scares me that something that big could take ahold of me lol.

Sounds like it could have had rabies to , I have always been told when an animal does something not common to them that is a good sign of rabies .

Caught one in a trap one time my wife swore was someones shepard cross. I told her if she could pet it I would turn it loose. She tried, that yellow eyed sucker about took her hand off.....


She jumped back and told me to shoot that SOB.



I dont know what it weighed, but it was as big as any shepard I ever saw. Its teeth were wore down to nubs too.

I got the feeling she had been around for awhile.

I work for a fur buyer who buys hundreds every year, and hes been doing it for over 30 years. He has NEVER seen one over 43 pounds. We weighed a couple HUGE ones last year. 41 and 39 pounds.

SOME GUYS WERE COYO HUNTING BEHIND MY HOUSE 3 YEARS AGO AND KILLED A 95 POUND COYODOG.I SAW IT A WEEK EARLIER IT TRYED TO GET MY LAB TO CHASE IT. I ALSO WAS HUNTING MY DOG BY ITSELF ONE NIGHT AND SHE COME RUNNING BACK WITH 5 COYOTES ABOUT 5 FEET BEHIND HER THEY GOT 10 FEET FROM ME AND STARTED TO CIRCLE ME. I HAD TO RUN AT THEM AND SCEAM TO GET THEM TO RUN.WISH I HAD MY GUN!!!!!!

i run yotes and we take them in the 50 lb range every year,but the average is between 35 to 45 lbs. last year i think was 59 lbs.here`s a photo of a yote around the 50lb mark, the hound in the pic weighs 90lbs.

I think allot of folks see a large male coyote and just assume it weights allot more than it really does. They have pretty long hair so even a 40 lb. coyote with a winter fur can look the same size as a 70 lb. hound. Most people would be surprised at how small even the largest ones look once you have the hide skinned off of them..suddenly they look like big squirells lol. I'd like to see one of these 80 lb yotes hanging from a scale...not doubting it, I'd just like to see it.

;;first of all, Yes they can breed with dogs. I grew up with a yoteXGSD cross. She was petite about 45 lbs or so. She had a dog body and tiny little yote feet Wonderful pet, loyal to her family and feircely protective. Difficult. Don't recommend ANY sort of hybrid...they can be VERY dangerous. We had a local hybrid here. SHe is a lovely red one. She is half malamute VERY large...looks like a red wolf. She is taller than my 28" greyhound. I know the mother dog who was caputred by animal control. They were unable to catch the pup who grew up with the yotes. Beautiful animal. I had a bold of her as a pup and she was "Peaceful" the one time she returned here...big enough to scare me though if she came back again ... not timid like a "normal" yote.
Our gamecam caught this beauty. VERY healthy and "plump". I forget now what the height of that stick in the middle of the pic. is... I posted that somewhere trying to "guess the size" of the yote I think the stick is 23"? But this is a good sized yote. He or she is about5-10ft behind the stick.They are not usually more than 40-50 lbs even if they LOOK huge. (Got a gorgeous grey fox in the cam too Fun toy! Lots of possums, skunks, cats and even a couple coon! For us "city folk" this is Cool!) Easily amused here too....

I grew up on a ranch and have been coyote hunting since I can remember. I have never seen one over 45 pounds although my grandmother had a coyote x german shepard cross that she had for years. It was an extremely loyal dog but weighed maybe 45 pounds. I wonder why the coyotes on the east coast are more daring, here they avoid us when they can or they meet mr 223.

damon shivers larry at coulters told me that happened to you by the claymont high school. i hunt the crow canyon race track and there is alot there. thanks everyone for the replies its kind of scary being out there hunting when they get that close to you.

Last winter me and my son had one follow us for half a mile through the woods one night,we had walked in and got the dogs off a tree and leashed em, when we started walking i heard something behind us,i shined it and it stopped and stared,when we walked it followed it stayed about 20 yards behind....kinda spooky....the farther we got the bigger it looked,but i'd say the biggest around these parts are probably 35 to 40...

Probably a Coydog. I did a report on Yotes for Biology a couple years ago and I got a lot of info on them from the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources and on the average females get to about 45lbs and the males anywhere from 45-55lbs. But, they can breed with dogs so if you seen an unusually large one (around 70-75lbs) then it was more than likely a Coydog or a male Yote with shaggy hair. We have been hearing them A LOT lately and have seen a few at a distance while hunting.

They are thick around here and we usually shoot about 30-50 every year when we hunt them but they come in to town close all the time. Last winter I got woke up almost every night by them howling outside of my house.we would look out the window with a full moon and they would be sitting about 30 yards from the house just howling.everytime we would try to get outside with a gun they would be gone by the second they could hear the door crack open..I have no idea why they kept coming into town like they but it was annoying!

biggest iv ever shot was a 45 pounder and the guys that run around here were telling me that was a good size dog.
