Fly bites--Worvels?
One of our 6 1/2 week old pups must've gotten bit by some sort of fly that lays eggs under the skin. At the end of last week, we noticed one of the females had a circle shaped scabby place on the back of her neck. It has gotten flaky and the hair fell out on the patch. It looks raised a little, isn't fevered, and you can almost see a sting mark in the middle of it. The best we could figure what it was is a worvel. Any thoughts? The only way we have heard of getting rid of it is frost/ cool weather. Please let me know if you know of any way to get rid of it. Other than that, she is very healthy and active. Thanks!

Sounds like wolf worms/ bot flies.
Here is a squirrel infested with them:

The place on the pup isn't nearly that large, but that is really gross! Is there a way to get rid of it?

could also be ringworm...if so athletes foot meds or nu-stock will take care of it....not sure with it being raised...lol
if its wolf/bot....it may not have grown enough to look like those buckshot posted

LOL....
...I Hate those suckers... We had horses here. I know we used a combo the vet gave us of a wormer and DMSO... I cannot recall the wormer, probably ivermectin... BUT... I would NOT treat it without the vet.
NOW... I had a wild kitten dying here, years ago... awful infected wound on it's neck. Being a MORON... I decided to treat it. Warm soaks etc... after a while, probably a few days, I forget.... when that ENORMOUS THING came out thru the hole I came closer to fainting than ever. I am the type that can stitch up wounds, pull out monster splinters etc... but those things are truly gross! At least on horses or cows you expect them. That cat "Wildcat" now known as Mellow Jr... is still alive. Weighs over 40 llbs and lives in the hayloft... He was trapped and neutered with the whole feral colony... I'm guessing he is now close to ten yrs old... GROSS!
Danielle, If you can I'd have the vet look at it. It could just be a bite but it could be ringworm too. PEOPLE get ringworm from their hounds and Vice Versa...Been there, done that. If the vet is too much $$$ then see if a older houndsman or woman can take a look and see if they can tell what it is.
Good luck... and BUCKSHOT... Well, You sure can find em!

If you aren't sure what you have then take the puppy to a vet. Their are several types of parasitic worms they can be infected with. I have treated several kittens over the years that have bot fly bites or worms. We call them wolves. If you can see the worm in there the best way to get it out is to pour table salt on it. The worm will come right out of there. Don't mash on the wound because the worms can release a toxin to kill the animal, or so I've been told. You may want to shave the hair off the surrounding area. After you have removed the worm you should spray the wound and area around the edge with purple spray medicine or iodine. The animal usually needs a dose of antibiotics to clear up any infection. I usually feed terramycine to the kittens in their water. Amy

I have made an appointment w/ the vet for tomorrow afternoon. I'm positive that it is one of those nasty little boogers. Thanks for all the advice!

I've seen them from time to time in the past. I would always just use my thumbs and work it out and kill it, the dogs always healed right up.

As it turns out, there was NO WARBLE. Just a small, localized infection. The vet drew some pussy, bloody stuff out of it and she is doing just fine. Vet said it should heal up good w/o anti-biotics.....But, the vet did say it looked a lot like she had a warble, but the "breathing hole" wasn't big enough. The small "bite wound" that we seen must've just been where her and another pup were horse playing. I'm glad it was just a boo boo because she goes to her new home this Saturday! Thanks everyone and now I do know what to do in the case of a WOLF! lol
