Shooting coons out

I don't sell the hides or eat them so I have no need to shoot them out. I have not shot a coon since May and I see no difference than if I shot every coon. How many people think you need to shoot your dogs coons for them to stay on top of their game?

They don't need everyone shot out to them. But I do like to shoot some to them. I believe in leaving some for seed. I know some people that if they get to the tree and there is three coons or more in it they will shoot every one of them. To me that is just crazy. I think it is more important for a pup or a rusty dog to get the meat in its mouth than a well tuned dog.

They dont really need any.. I do reward them alittle during the season on state land only... I aint shot one to mine since the last night of coon season feb 28th... Shes still treeing em the same as always.

Alot of coons can also make some start slick treeing more. Not all dogs but I've seen it happen. Can also make a young dog start milling the tree bad..Sandman.You own hellbilly? I drew out with him awhile back..A rough dog had chewed on billys ears pretty bad that night.I'm proud I was hunting a female. Also saw a 400+ pound bear that night going to the tree. Man it was a biggun.

Well I like killing the coons, and I believe it makes a difference in a dog.

In my experience a dog that "needs" coons shot out to it ain't got enough drive or tree for me.

I want them to hunt because it just can't help itself, whether or not it gets a coon.

Even when I hunted 3-4 nights a week my dog only got 5-10 coon shot out to it in an entire year.

I heard an old sayin once and it kinda rings true, "the better the dog you got the more coons you leave settin".

Think on thatun a while LOL.

I've never heard that saying but I have heard that a "man with a poor coondog won't kill as many as a man with a nice coondog" ponder on that.

I sure don't think a dog needs alot of coon out to it. If you need to do that to me you need another dog!

In my opinion a good broke dog should be able to go all summer without a coon in its mouth! I know I do. I have a 8 yr old blue female that hasn't had a coon since late jan. 2007

If you shoot out to many I think it can cause a dog to keep going back to trees that has a coon in it he treed.

Now pups on the other hand need coons shot out if they do good.
That will help alot. They need to know what there out there for. Of course natural ability helps too!

it's all just a matter of preference what i really dont like to hear is if u kill everyone the dog will go back to trees and so on and so on. IF a dog is doing something he isnt suppose to just because your shooting to many coons you need to train your dog better. ive seen guys who shoot every coon there dogs tree during the week then take um to a hunt on the weekend walk there dog 10-15yards off tree turn um lose they shoot outta there like a cannon and that dog be treed by itself so nothing else to influence it to go hunting (proper training) what's yalls theroy on that one

I agree with most all that John Wick says in his books. Coonhounds do not need a whole lot of coons. It is in their DNA to tree coons. It is more in the minds of the hunter than the needs of the dogs to have a lot of coons shout out to them. What I cannot stand is morons who shoot coon after coon all summer long out of the same spots that I hunt. I like to be able to hunt near my house what with the price of gas, and wear and tear on vehicles, etc. I realize that raccoons are far from being an endangered species, but here in upstate central NY the population is not all that huge, and the habitat is not as good as the more open farm country to the west. It is quite easy to clean out an area of coons in short order. Then you can go and hunt and have your young dog have lots of opportunties to run fox, coyote, skunk, possum, and deer. People who do this are illegal, (in violation of fish and wilflife law) greedy, selfish, and give credence to all the anti's out there.

some dogs need one everynow and then, some could go most of thier life without one, and some look plain stupid if you knock one out

If you have a dog that needs a bunch of coons, you are shooting the wrong animal.

I agree that if a dog has to have a lot of coon shot down to it to look good, you probably need to find another dog. My dog's rarely get a coon and they operate just fine for me. I shine the tree, see the two eyes looking down, pat my dog on the head, and lead them off the tree. Sometimes I think a pat on the head is better than shooting 5 coons out to a dog.

Positive re/enforcement

Some dogs need a reward at the end. For some dogs to get bitten up by a coon at the tree, is a reason not to stick around. Figure out what your dog needs.

Mike, if my dog left a tree cause a coon decided to chew on him a little he wouldn't go home. That tells me he's got no grit and he won't eat my feed. I cannot abide a cowardly dog, it's a fault I can't live with. I shot 43 coon last season, mostly in Dec. and Jan. and paid for my dogs shots, a bunch of dog food, and a new tritronics two dog setup with the money I got for the hides. With the tritronics I taught my old dog to come off the tree without a leash this summer and he minds better than most peoples kids with just the tone button. He hasn't had a coon in his mouth since the end of kill season and he trees me coon every time I take him out. It ain't about whether you give them fur or not, it's about what's inside your dog. I realize some areas of the country can't sustain this kind of hunting pressure, but around here there's no shortage of coon.

Ive heard this alot, anytime a Man, has a Hound that Slick trees alot, they start bashing people that do shoot Coon out to their hounds.
And Ive noticed, some of these same people, When you take them out hunting with you, and your hound trees a Coon for them.
They are all excited, and want you to shoot the Coon out.
To each his own. I do not however, believe in shooting out every Coon your hound trees, a good hound, can wipe out alot of Coons in a Season.

So why would anyone want to kill every coon? Is it because you can say I killed more then you? Your buddy Im talking about! I sometimes think its a number game to some! Bad choice if you ask me.

Its a sport not a slotter or it should be.

I agree with the fella that said alot of hounds a nice pat on the head and praise them is worth several coons down to them. I truly believe that.

killing coons

well if u dont shoot them out,Someone please tell me what is the best way to keep my dog at the tree till i get there.I know ya'll might say find another dog but he is still young like 1yr2months old i'm just looking for some advise.

It is very rare that I shoot a coon out unless it is too a young dog.

My older dogs get just a few a year, and I have hunted with some that is just as accurate, but I haven`t hunted with any I would call more accurate.

Do you hunt Tate`s Hell? I have been there and it is some rough hunting.
