Yes it's getting awfull around Lake of the Ozark! My kinfolks have been here since the 1800s. While other kids were learning their ABCs we learned the SSS's (SHOOT, SHOVEL, SHUTUP) times change some folks dont. Read the book BUGLE ANNE. It let's people know where we stand with our hounds. If a newcomer gives ya any trouble loan a copy to them. They might learn to enjoy listening to a hound run and tree! I just own 40 acres, my brother, cousin, good neihbors own about 1400 acres. Anybody asks us to hunt we let em! IT'S GOD'S EARTH we're just the caretakers for a little while.

I'm curious about your new neighbors

Was that the first time you had met them since they were so new? I can imagine they about soiled their shorts wondering who or what was in their backyard. I live a bit out of town so we and the neighbors are more relaxed about doors but when my city slick brother and his wife come to visit he locks our screen door in the middle of the day. I nearly broke it off the frame once trying to step outside. Oh he drives me nuts but he's been robbed at gunpoint twice as a pharmacist so he gets twitchy. It takes him a day or so to relax when they come up from Louisville. They came up one time on the duck opener. He doesn't usually poke his head out of bed before 8 or 9 am but that morning the folks down the road had the teal and mallards going at 6am. I had to laugh, I can lay in bed and enjoy hearing it and go back to sleep if I like. He wondered if we were safe. LOL He must be adopted. He took piano lessons and I ran and played in the woods behind his piano teachers house. My parents had more sense than to try forcing me to learn an instrument. Anyhow, my point is to look for ways to connect with those new city transplants and let them know you aren't the creepy folks from the movie Deliverance. Unless you really are, then forget it and squeal like a piggy.

Some folks retired around the road from up"Jerzeeee" way. They had always rented an apartment. They had to be shown how to use a mailbox, ie how to put the flag up so the mail carrier would pickup her letters. She also wanted to know "why are there so many pick-ups", last but not least "who goes around and cleans up behind the cows"? These are the people who move our beautiful state who complain about smelling cow manure, complain about hunting, and complain about lack of services and then want to raise my taxes to accomodate them.

Guys

I'm a city slicker. Born in the Big Apple. But I LOVE coonhunting.

If your conservation officers are any good, they are used to this kind of thing and can calm the situation down. City slickers don't see firearms in the hands of anybody but bad guys, and need to learn how to use them safely so they're not afraid. Invite them over. Show them how to shoot at a target and what's fun about guns.
Many don't understand how cruel nature is, and aren't sympathetic to anything that draws blood until they taste the meat, their own pet runs a deer, or they have critters invading their homes and gardens.

Each new neighbor has to be approached in his/her own way. Offer a copy of Where the Red Fern Grows to the kids. Offer the free copy of the hunting guide/rules & regulations they give out at places where you can buy a license to the adults. Suggest they take a hunter education course. Offer to take them on a night time chase without firearms--it will never occur to most that its possible to go outside at night.. Invite them over for some backstrap after deer season. Offer to do some pest control in their attic. It will take them awhile to get educated--most think they're knowledgeable and educated and you're ignorant, but they will catch on eventually.

YEEEE HAWWWW to all the above!!
I was one of those city slickers, many years ago. Athough I did Rabbit hunt, Deer Hunt and Squirrel hunt with my Dad, I had no idea what coonhunting was all about.

My hubby coonhunted when I met him, had a fat ornery Plott when we started dating. When I stopped by in the evenings to visit, ole Porkchop poked his head out and gave me heck. (He finally got used to me, since I brought treats. )

We married and moved to Wakeman, although we are in the 'Village' limits, we're tucked back in the woods on the River bank. My first encounter with what I thought was a wild animal about scared me to death!! I heard growling and alot of it. Dave was out for the evening, I was home alone with our daughter. Seeing as I owned my own shotgun and a really big Rottweiler, I was tackling whatever it was. The growling was coming from over the hill that led to the river, I had myself convinced it was a BEAR!!!

No sooner did I get locked and loaded, leashed up and out the door, Dave came in....I have yet to this date seen him laugh so hard! What I thought was growling was actually the noise from the tires of the race cars at Norwalk Raceway!!!!

Then of course I got into coonhunting. My 'girlfriends' just didn't understand. They thought I had lost my mind, wandering around in the middle of the night, chasing a dog that just didn't shut up, falling in the water and mud!! I'm thinking it was heavon they thought it was dementia.

My best friend's hubby decide to make a go of it. It took alot of convincing on our part to talk her into getting him a hound. She just didn't understand. All she could say was "why would I want him trapsin' around at night".
At that time, all I could say was, "if Dave's in the woods chasing after those hounds, chasing after ole Mr. Coon....He isn't settin' in a bar somewheres chasing his whiskey with beer and chasin' those women folk that don't run too fast".

I just wish they'd all disapear. And I wouldn't mind helping them. I have no use for city folk. Their the most closed minded bunch of total idiots there ever was. When folks move to the city I think they check their brains at the gate.
