question for everyone.......

..............some folks on here have stated that some great "coon dogs" have run fox and deer, then came treed on coons, and won many a hunt............and that they really didn't mind..............guess I'm old school, and not a "new age" coonhunter......or maybe more of a pleasure hunter than a competition hunter.....but I won't put up with it...........HOW MANY DON'T CARE IF THEIR DOGS RUN JUNK................AS LONG AS SOMEWHERE, THEY COME TREED??

I like a coodog to be just that after COON period! If I wanted a running dog I'd own running dogs. If I wanted a possum dog I'd have one. I hate a coondog that runs trash and falls over on a coon. Alot of younger hunters I know cant even tell when their dog's running junk(grey fox) is the worst to tell because their dog will tap a tree every so often then fall over on a coon and tree it.

young and old school

Guess I am young in coon hunting years but old in life years so I dont know where I fall in this but I do not want my dogs running anything but coons. It's been a learning experience with us but we have gone through possum, rabbit, fox, training (live traps are wonderful )and made those non events. The only one left is deer and until sat night when the "girls" left the county I would have said we are ok on that but now I'm thinking maybe a lesson or two on them is worthwhile to. Pleasure or competitiion hunt I want to know that when I strike them its a coon (think it will save a lot of walking to which comes from the old side of me, lol)

in the ground

THIS MAY SEEM CRUEL OR NOT BUT IF I GO TO THE WOODS TO HUNT COON I WANT TO HUNT COON. IF I WANTED TO HUNT DEER I WOULD DEER HUNT. IF A DOG I HAVE RUNS ANYTHING BUT A COON IT WILL BE PUSHING UP DAISYS IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

Human nature.....

Apparently, all you have to do to hunt a perfect dog is own a computer.

I'v seen babbeling, running junk, slick treeing, me tooing, backtracking, tree gators and everything in between.

99% of the time the person that unsnapped the dog is totally oblivious to any problem....Not because they are dishonest, but because they love the dog and cant believe it would ever do wrong.

Dogs that get struck quick and get under a coon win, like it or not, its an unavoidable fact.

.......I guess the poll, at least so far, indicates most folks want a good, honest hound to hunt with..........whether it costs them a cast win or not............lol

Yea, Tucker has a very distinct loud mouth.

Sounds like you were hunting with Chad Klug....tough to have a bad hunt with him.

one guy i hunted with told me "i dont mind breakin these young dogs off trash, means theyre gamey, and like to run. dont have to beg em to go huntin or run somthin. then i just narrow it down to coon..."

i personally cant stand a trash runnin dog- i have coondogs and i have deer dogs. if i take my coondogs to the woods i expect for them to strike a coon, run a coon and tree a coon, if i wanted to run a deer all over the woods i woulda loaded up the deer dogs.

yes, go to some nite hunts and see how many straight dogs are actually outthere. I don't mind if they bump a deer when they are young, and if shock them, it takes some hunt out of them, so you get wait till they get over it. nobody wants a junkie dog though.

Posted by GA DAWG on 08-22-2007 07:02 PM:

I dont care if they run rabbits as long as they get a coon treed!!!!!!!!!! LOL.....

No not really. I hate trashy dogs...

Posted by brian gilley on 08-22-2007 07:09 PM:

I love the strike some trash quick, fast game only, get it in the country, break off on a coon when the cross one and tree it. You can keep your tree power I'll take my track dogs just like the dogs from the old days that coondawg speaks about, trashy but actually had something when they treed. When you take the junk out of junky dog 9 times out of 10 you take the fire out of him, he can run whatever he wants but when he comes treed he better have a coon, I hunt thin coons so most of the time they will have to huntin to find one, what better way to cover some ground and get in the country quick and find a coon than to run some junk and tote first strike??? Walk you to death in a hunt burn up lots of clock and have a coon when you get to em. How many of you have straight honest nothing but coondogs that you all speak of??? Im talking about no circle/ slick trees, no feeder buckets, no possums, no just pull up because they cant find anything anywhere?? I am talking about a dog that two hours after you cut him loose and he hasnt found any coons he still steadily trotting through the woods deeper and deeper trying to find a coon??? I like to know my dog can run I mean run a track, the tree part is the least important thing to me, and if a pup cant run a deer like he's tied to it, it wont stay here. 10 to 1 rather a pup run a deer than slick tree. ....... I very respectfully disagree with ya, Jeremiah.........don't believe the "take the junk out, ya take the fire out thing"........seen too many that have fire, and are not junky...........same as you, though, I can't take a slick treein' dog...........

John I agree with you that there are some dogs that have the fire and are not trashy, Im not talking about a trashy dog that runs junk all night, I am not talkin about an armadillo dog Im talkin about a deep huntin dog that most people wont even know what he is doing when he is doing it all they will know is he got in the country and got treed and had a coon when we got to him. Not talkin about runnin junk across the county, just bumpin a little somethin until he crosses the next branch or bottom, he did 3 things that I like by doing this, he got struck, he is keepin the time off of him, and when he gets over there off the beaten path, he is most likely going to come across a coon and he is going to have it when he trees. A trashy young dog shows me two things, he is has the desire and the drive to go hunting, and it also shows me how welll he can move a track. The tree minded dog of today that goes out there and does nothing and comes back in a little while tells me maybe he's lazy and didnt go very far or maybe he's scared, or maybe he just doesnt have that good of a nose. The slick treein young dog that has been on buckets too long and grabs a tree within the first few hundred yards tells me he's lazy and possibly stupid and lookin for an easy pettin !!!!!
