-- Dog hauler question. (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=164119)

Dog hauler question.

I have seen those little platforms that people put deer on the back of their SUV's and luggage on etc.

I am looking for one big enough for a dog box.

I would like to take my hound with me when we take a trip back home, but there's not enough room in my truck and we will need to fit a dogbox onto the SUV somehow or drive 2 vehicles.

Does anybody make one big enough or would I need to go to a local wielder or something?

Just hitching a platform to the SUV and strapping the box on it would be ideal I think, but the biggest one I seen was only 30 inches in length. They are all plenty wide enough, but I haven't been able to find one long enough.

Anybody out there know of anything?

dont know of any

but I would make super sure they are very well ventillated. Your exhaust would blow right into the box. I have heard of dogs dieing that way.

They make a platform that goes into a receiver hitch, but I would worry about the exhaust issue, and what if someone rear-ends you? I would crate the dog and put that in the back of your SUV, and then put your luggage and other stuff on the roof or on a receiver mounted platform. There's all sorts of secure ways to put luggage and bags, etc..outside the vehicle.

Hi Jimmy, good to hear from you and to see you are still at it. Mjflores makes good points. I always worried about my hounds riding in the back of the suv that way for the exaust and taking a risk of an accident. I like the idea of the dog in the back and the bags on the hitch. Its heat, a/c for the hound and better for it, though they might smell a tad bit lol.
BTW im doing well, you probably allready had that figured out,,,,thanks for your support. We miss you and Scotty.

Rip a friend of mine made one like your talking about and a state trooper in montana actually pulled him over on the freeway and told him that he personally had seen two bird dogs die from exhaust in those type carriers.

Dog Hauler

Alot of hunters around here use the hitch mounted dog box, but a standard carrier would have to be modified by raising it up for ground clearance (requires a good welder) and only use vents that are away from the exhaust and the doors facing the passenger side of the road. I personally would'nt haul them in it on a hot day more than 50 miles, my dog got bad sick on the ride home from AO last year, this year he will be in the SUV with temp control.

Thanks all.

Probably will get a trailor or put her in the SUV, not liking that option too much though as my hound is an outside dog and, well, she smells like a hound LOL.

Lee, good to hear you are doing OK. Remember I meant what I said, call any time 24/7.

My bunch is doing great, Addie just turned 19 months old and is somethin else.

I just got back from a week vacation and couldn't take Candy with me which is why I asked the question. She did tree me a coon after I got back though.

Holler at me sometime, I think I am going to try and hunt at least once a week or so. Candy is way, way, way too fat, looks like a 55 gallon barrell on backer sticks LOL.

a lot of dogs have died from exhust gases riding in trailers also, put your stuff in the trailer and the dog in the vehicle with you.
