How Old Is To Old ????

What's the oldest anyone has known a female to still come in heat ? And if maybe a female that normally comes in every six months can drop to once a year with older age. thanks !!

Ive seen them come in heat in the 11-12+ year old range. They can be more inconsistent about doing it, and there heats can last longer too.

Ruby is 9 and the prostragen test didnt have her ready to breed till her 16th day. She had 2 pups.

Do you think that may be why Autumn stood so long for the stud? I noticed blood on a Friday, took her to the stud the following Tues. He bred her Weds. & on through to the following Thursday. She was still flagging when we brought her home, but only for a day. She is 6 yrs. old.

I used to always count 11 days from the first spotting and cover them then. Then I had a female who would stand on her 7th day and that was it.

Now I just go to the vet and have the prostragen test done...........I think its around $15 or $20......... and let him tell me when to breed them. I have found out that theres a big varence in each ones timing. Ive had them ready anywheres from the 7th-18th day.

Ruby was standing 3 days before the test had her at her peak estragen level. I realy dont think I would have gotten any pups if I would have bred her by counting days. At her age timing was critical.

by my count, your females heat was textbook.

Annes shadow

Would take a male on the 4th day...and have pups.....ifn we waited to the 11th day and no pups

depends on the dog- some dogs will still come in heat at 10-12 yrs old or older and do fine but some probably cant have a litter of pups and shouldnt be bred for their own health. if your females still goin strong at 12yo, healthy, and can hold her own in the woods theres no reason she couldnt have a nice litter of pups.
