Was it a coon?
Took the 2 girls, ages 13, myself & Zam out hunting this evening. Oh what fun, they was scared of everything that moved or might have moved, talked & talked about...boys etc. & so on. Made 2 drops, first one, nothing, not even a bark. Second one was in a sweet corn patch that had been throughly pulverized by coon, groundhog, etc. Zam hunted the whole field, under the Mulberry tree & everything & nothing. Then after leashing up & heading for the truck, he starts to really pull on the lead & wind something in the field corn patch. I turned him loose & he took off, I could hear him smelling & working the ground hard, he opens, runs a bit, opens again & kind of goes in circles & back & forth & then takes off down through the corn, wide open & moving. Then he just shut up, not another sound until he comes back to me from the direction we had just walked up from, about 15 minutes later. Could this have been a coon? If so, what happen that he didn't tree it, can a dog just lose a coon like that? I very highly doubt it was a deer, he started the track about 20 feet from us, about 5 rows of corn in. Hubby said maybe a fox, but don't they run in wide circles? Very confused, need help. Also, the moon was very bright.
P.S.: Teenagers are soooo much fun to hunt with...had me scared of my own shadow tonight.

Might have caught a kitten coon.....
How old is the dog?
Might have been a rabbit.

Just all 'round , meat gettin' hounds.
I would say it was a coon and he put it in a hole. Keep on hunting him and you will learn if it was a coon or not. Keep them girls hunting and you will not have to look for them later. Good luck and if I can help you in any way just shout.
truth is you'll never know what it was........................
One of the great mysteries of coon hunting.
i call that runnin Boofers....
agrees with Hip Hop....

LOLOL, EB!
I love hunting with my 15 y/o. The ONLY time she doesn't mind my singing and stands close enough to me to touch whenever we aren't actually walking! That doesn't happen in the grocery store anymore
I agree it's one of life's mysteries what Zam was after. Like the Boofers idea though. Guess we have those here in Oregon, too.
I'll not tell
the girls it was a Boofer, it'll sound toooo scarey to them. I plan to keep them in the woods, thats for darn sure. Some strange reason, my daughter looks up to me & thinks I'm cool, not like other kids mom's. Course not sure if thats a compliment or not. teenagers. We are planning to go out tonight again & this time, take Autumn along, she is my sure fire no run deer or fox dog. Zam is 4 yrs. old & hadn't been hunted in over a year, til we got him back & took him out. He treed coon for us everynight, save one. Now I take him out without hubby & with the 2 girls, (one of which never had gone hunting) & he does this.
Thanks for all your help.

So other words...they are all nice phrases for...the dog was standing on his head whistling Dixie. One of those 'oh yeah, it's there baby, don't put me back in the box & go home yet', type things?
