treein problem...need help
I am needing to know how to get a pup to tree.
Ive tried a caged coon...he has had coon shot out to him..Tried tying him away from the tree and annoying him and really petting up my old dog..to try and make him jealous..have even hunted him with different dogs.
I've wondered about trying drags and runing a scent across the ground and then smothering the tree with the scent of coon..but i dunno...im running out of ideas..so any would be really appreciated..
He runs track great...and then as soon as he gets to the tree he is as quiet as a mouse...he is always there but doesnt bark at all.
Thanks 4 your time.

i dont know why but pups like this will start to bark at a coon better in there kennel. if you have a dog kenneled next to your young dog that will bark at a caged coon. show it to him & set it in front of the other dog & shake it around. dont hang it up do this 3 times & i garrantee he will bark at it. dont give up on him if you like him, some just start later than others. if he is running a track & at the tree, it will click one night.

he is prob. trying together them all up to 1 tree
this time a year he may have trouble singling 1
coon out and finishing it just be patient
It's hard to believe that a dog now a days won't tree, but i've had tp put down 2 of the better "prospects" i've ever had because they wouldn't tree. Believe it or not they were both walkers! They all don't make it ! jmo
sounds like to me a training problem if your culling
all your pups
No....they were just BLUETICKS !!! LOLOLOLOL!!!
No seriously it's probably a "patience problem", & they were out of the same dog. IF you must know.
I don't mind a dog who starts treeing a little later in their "puppyhood" IMHO it seems they tend to be a little more accurate then the pups who are jawing up a tree at 3 months old.
Are you hunting with other dogs? If so, at the tree, tie him back. Regardless of if you knock it out or not, make a big fuss over the other dogs. If you do knock it out, just ignore the pup.
I have had good luck with jumping game out of the trees. Course my game is a little easier to see coming down. Once or twice is usually all it takes for the light bulb to come on.

SAVE THE COON, HUNT WITH A HOUND!
Bryan J, In my case they were both well over a yr. old. I showed each of them numerus caged coon and hunted the hair off em w/ "pup trainers", & I had come to the conclusion that it wasn't gonna happen. I gave the male pup to my daddy nlaw and he tried him for 6 mo. during kill season. He came to the same conclusion, that this paticular blood line had too much track and not enough tree. The gyp would strike run and locate @ the tree and would then go to back trackin' the way the track came in. Back trackin' is almost as bad as a mean dog and a slick treer. This is just my experiance. Needless to say I won't be gettin' Aanymore of that cross...lol..
There are certain big problems with hounds that just cannot be corrected. You need certain raw materials to at least work with or you are going to be in for a lot of frustrating nights. Teaching a dog to tree is something you should not be having to worry about with the hounds of today. If by a year old a pup does not express interest in a tree with a coon in it, it may never do so.

I'll tell you, and bear in mind I'm no expert, and dont claim to be so..take it for what it's worth. I dont care at all if a pup does anything at the 1 year mark. Will the dog tree a hanging coon? At that age it should be showing you something but I wouldn't worry. If it's given you some hope by showing talent, then I would stop messing with that dog for a while...like 4 months or more. You can do more harm than good trying to squeeze hunting talent from a young dog. I looked back recently and realize just how much time I wasted taking dogs hunting that just were not mentally ready to be out there yet. They learn bad habits, maybe trash problems, because they're not ready to be looking for a coon. How many of you know of dogs that were well out of puppyhood, were given a shot, and they excelled? I know a few. I just rcently got to see a young female, just over 2 years old go. She's a fixed, house dog, and had never been messed with but after a few times out she's running and treeing her own coon! I have a male that I put back in the kennel at a year and a half old for being dumb and lazy. Took him back out after about 5 months. During the 5 month rest, I hunted him a handful of times thats it. Now I'm leaning on him hard and guess what? He's doing really well! He's showing me more coon now then I ever thought he was capable of when I put him up to grow up a bit. So..if it was me I'd out that dog up until maybe late fall and get a fresh start. That is only if it the dog has truley shown you that it has something under the hood. Good luck
Yeah we have wondered about puttin him up For a while then wait until coon season and start hunting him again and shooting coons out. Thanks 4 the advice

I HAVE A ENGLISH MALE HE IS 3. HE WAS HUNTED ALOT WHEN HE WAS 1TO1.5 YEARSOLD RAN TRACK BETTER THE MOST DOGS BUT WOULDNT TREE.I TOOK HIM BACK WHEN HE WAS 2 HE JUST STARTED TREEING GOOD. I WORKED WITH 3 NIGHTS A WEEK.WHEN HE TREED GOOD ON 1 TREE HE WAS DONE FOR THE NIGHT TILL THE NEXT TIME. NOW HES TREED BEFORE THE OTHER DOGS 90% OF THE TIME. GIVE HIM TIME AND LOOK AT YOUR TRAINING THINK OF DIFFERT THING TO TRY. I USE THE SHAKING OUT TO GET DOG TO TREE MORE BUT IT IS RISKY.
