How many of you hunt and show your dog? Irregardless of the breed, age, and gender.. Tell us why you hunt & show; just hunt; and why.. And also, if you don't care for bench shows..

I hunt and show both. I love competition.
Here's my reasonings.

Show: I like training my dogs to bench show and gaiting. I think it's fun to see how good my dog can look and for my dog to be judged. I like meeting new people, and seeing the differences in the dogs. It gives me that much more to work with and improve on my dog.

Hunting: I love competion as I said. I love the adrinalyn rush when your calling your dogs or waiting out the time. It's fun looking for the dog and figuring out what you need to do to win. How to fix a mistake you made, and all that stuff. I like meeting new people. I like just listening to the dogs in general. It's something that helps my family bond togather since we all enjoy it.

I do both!

I have been Coonhunting all my life, which is 18 years... 19 in december. my grandfather hunted, my dad hunts. It just runs in the family. We didnt get into reg. hounds untill 2001 when we bought our bluetick male Rock. (who we still have today). I just could not imagin not having coonhounds in my live. I took up showing in 2002 and love presenting my hounds.... but its not like going out at night and listening to the hounds (expectialy my ol black and tan) open up on a track. I am very passionate for the sport!

well i guess i'm guilty as charged. i love to bench show and thats it!! i love the feel of the hound on the short leash and how they move. i know the purpose is for hunting...well i just have a love for a gorgouse show dog. i don't care what its hunting back ground is i don't care if it will even tree a coon just as long as it has a good set of feet and great conformation. oh and a good show record to back it up...like a show bloodline. i know its not right to keep my DUAL purpose hounds out of the woods but oh well they are my dogs and i can do with them what i please. i know poeple look for the dual purpose hound but lets be honest do you think a judge is goin to pick a huntin dog thats all beat up and has half of it bottum ear chewed off when you have the well groomed well taken care of hound right beside it....what do you think??? well i say hes goin with the well taken care of hound. and i don't mean to affend anybody but is there really a such thing as a dual purpose hound??

shows= the family gets in on it even my seven year old daughter who just won il state queen of show in her first show

hunts= that is what these dogs are bred to do. plus meeting all the nice and not so nice people along the way. if you make a new friend regardless on how the hunt turned out then YOU are the WINNER.

And people like you is what ruining our breed. They are breed for coonhunting thats why they are "coondogs". I don't care if the judge will pick a show & go over me. And you're wrong I have a dog who hunts and shows both and she's beat a lot of "show&goes". Not all judges do this some of them don't care about scars. It's based on the conformation of the dog, if they have good feet&conformation who cares about the little scar on their face. But Im going to stop there because this isnt what this topic is about.

All i do is hunt my dogs, ive shown in 2 shows in my life and lost both times. Probley not the dogs fault, but mine cuz i really know next to nothing about the bench shows. I like to go to the nite hunts more then anything to have a good time. Theres no better feeling then your dog winning a hunt, and haveing 775+ points and none of the other 3 dogs score a single point. And on the same note its fun to see other dogs win a cast fairly, when it deserves to win.

You do not have duel purpose hounds.How could they be?? You dont hunt them.

If the dog with the "chewed up"ears is the better dog,yes!!(I would.UKC lic 9271)

A lot of "show dogs" dont have the conformation and/or anglation to be hunting dogs.Little tight cat feet ramrod straight front legs.No width of chest(lookin more like whippets)

i can presoanly tell you that my brother hunting dogs and my show dogs are in two completly differnet classes of hounds. my females double breed sackett jr. and hes got some something dog. you put them on the bench beside each other and my dog have more width of chest and body structure than his. just because i choose not to hunt my dog does not say anything about me as a person. there are only 2 show dogs in our kennel and they don't hunt. not to say they wouldn't there just not allowed to. the person who had my female before i got her hunted her. so yeah i guess there is a thing as a dual purpose hound. so i guess i was wrong but just because someone choose not hunt there dog and only bench then or feild trial them or water race them does not mean that they are whats cause the sport to end. i do pleasure hunt some but i don't competion hunt. so if i'm causing our sport to die you need to jump down a lot of other people throats as well. and if you don't want to hear other peoples oppion on a topic don't ask the question.

Well then don't be downing are dogs on showing because they hunt and you won't have to worry about it. You never told us anything about you hunting all you said was showing. Yes there is such thing as a dual purpose hound.

I'm sure there was a time in our past when some non-hunting show breeder was telling the world that breeding Cockers for show would not ruin the breed. Or Irish Setters. Or German Shepards. And we all know the rest of that story.

what does this have to do with breeding quality hounds?absoulty nothing! and just to let you know i never said any one had to agree with me! so if your names not on my dogs papers, you don't pay their vet bills, you don't buy their food, and you don't clean their kennels... your oppion really doesn't matter to me!!so when you start doing that let me know and i'll do whatever you want me to with MY hounds!!

I got to say is this: Flat out..
I know alot of people that just pleasure hunt and bench show.. They dont do the comp. hunts because of Some people take advantage.. they like just to hear the hounds and see a coon, cat or bear in that tree.. That doesnt mean they dont breed good quality hounds.. It just means that they dont like to comp hunt cuz someone out there ruined it for them, took the fun out of it. We do have people out there like that..
Yes, we do have breeders out there that just breed for show and are ruining the breed.. I agree with that. But just jump on someone because they just "show"..
An old man once told me (he is in 80's) the reason he dont comp hunt, cuz no youngester is going to wait for an old man. I tried it"
but he does show and does have good quality dogs for both hunt and show..
So instead of knocking people down for what they do.. Look more into what they do first..
My mother is not going to comp hunt cuz of these people that take advantage of the situation.. She has asthma and a bad knee so they will do whatever to win.

By the way, I am a show, pleasure hunter and comp hunter

Besides that, Bench people are helping to keep this sport alive... Their money is just as green.. What they chose to do with their dogs is their business. If you feel that they are ruining the breed, dont buy a pup from them. Simple as that.. Go find another breeder that breeds for what you want...
Just dont knock people down.. I find there is alot of people leaving this sport cuz people knock them for what they do..
By the way, all of mine are versality..
They are not just coondogs, they are also bear and cat.. I even have two that will do coyote..
These dogs are hunting dogs, I even have one that hunts for his feed dish and bed LMAO

hunt what I show and show what I hunt. Always have. I found out a long time ago. It doesn't cost anymore to feed a pretty dog.
Plus if they are built right and have the show confirmation, a lot of times it gives them an edge in the woods. Just like a great athlete.

i agree with you. you are exactly right. i don't breed just for show dogs i'm cross my female in a couple months with a grand nite champion. hopefully it will be a proven cross. you are right about ppl reniuning me with comp. hunting i have had way to many "OLDER" men walking all over me in the woods. i desided i would move my hounds else where because of that. i pleasure hunt i just don't pleasure hunt my show dogs. they get out and run and my new pup might be what y'all would call a dual purpose hound....hes 9 months old and will run on a drag but thats it and i'm not pushing him to do anything else. the bad thing about me not comp.hunt the person who is soly resposible for me not hunting is my brother!! know i just don't like it have no desire to be part of it! i will go and suport him but other than that want nothing to do with comp. hunting you can take my oppion as this i got one and so do you some stink and others don't! this is all i'm sayin on this subject anymore.

She trees racoon. Will leave the truck so fast going hunting it will suck your boots off your feet if you don't have them laced on.
