Mason & Judging Dogs

Mason thats a good question. Are you asking what a judge looks for when judging dogs or when you are running hounds? If its a judge or judges running behind dogs in the field, then your for their opion on what dog has done the best job. What they saw and what they could not see.
I don't judge because of my knee, but I will pound a hound to get it ready for a hunt, thats when I judge it's capabilities. Everybody has evaluated there own dogs but are we truthful with ourselves, when we do this. One I have here will probably never make it to a hunt because she has problems with a large pack and strange dogs. I'm working on this, but if she knows the dogs she's running with she can smoke. I also hunt some dogs for other people once in a while and I'm not afraid to tell them what I saw out of there dog. Here's my question how can you really judge a dog by seeing it go one day, every dog has good and bad days. This could be from the area there use to running in to who knows what. I would rather have you come and bring your chair, cut them loose and let them do what they do best and be ready to take a little ribbin and have a good time.

g

Thornie I guess you are talking to me...lol

No not judging at a trial. The question which is kind of hard to fully express. Is when you go see hounds in the field. What is the first thing you look for. Trialing, fun running or gun hunting. Just kind of a campfire question. Ive had this conversation with several people over the years and usually they all had different answers. Its just an opinion. Some people wont look at one unless its a certain color, some look at its hunt, some look at its handling and so on. Just curious whats the first thing someone looks for. No right or wrong answer as it is just an opinion. Just meant to stimulate non confrontational debates if any at all.

Im with you on not being able to judge a hound in one day. Especially at trials. It is best to see them go several times with alot of time on the ground so that other factors that translate into a "Good Dog" can be realized.

The old chairs and ribbins are up my alley. Give me a shout and well do just that. Cause you are more likely to catch me doing that than running the roads trialing. Although I am planning on hitting a few this year and trying UKC in the near future, just to see how there hunts are.

Keep em runnin.
