strike dogs

how many of you guys strike your dogs from the truck? up here we hunt mostly from the rig because the coon are alittle farther apart then most of you guys. alot of the strikes we get are to close to houses so we have to pick the strikes we can run

Bear hunters down my way do it that way, but I have never tried it with coon dogs.

had a male dog that when cruising down the road would strike form the dog box, so one day for kicks when he struck i stopped the truck and cut him loose, he went in struck the track and got it treed, thought it was a one time deal but everytime he struck from the box he would do the same thing, he name was gr.ch.nt.ch.lucking's red tornado, now on the other hand his son nt.ch.gr.ch.l&i red hot wylie couldn't do that but when leading him out of the woods after treeing coon he would locate off his leash, when cut loose he would run from 80 to 300 yards with no track and come up treed and have a coon(he was a very open mouthed dog) wylie's daughter cowgirl can tree kitten coon that other dogs can't smell, the cool thing is her son desperado has struck out of the box while moving form spot to spot, i haven't had the right spot to try and cut him though, it would be neat to see that trait jump generations like that.

Hmmmm, I believe you guys are talking about RIG dogs...a strike dog is a little different.

Lots of dogs bark in the box, very, very, very few are barking because they have winded desired game.

A GOOD rig dog is probably the rarest of all talents..IMO

We rig hunt for coon all the time except when the coon are in the corn and we can send them in the corn. Up where I am at we hunt big chunks of state and federal land where the coon can be thin at times. Your go deep dogs could literally be several miles from where you cast them before they strike a coon.

Our dogs are quiet in the box but will strike hard going down the highway 55 mph when they wind a coon.

We have never had any trouble getting a dog started rigging, the down side is if you rig all of the time some dogs won't go very deep if you cast them or won't stay out long, they will come back after 10 or 15 minutes if they don't hit a coon. We have had some good rig dogs that would cast deep also, just depends on the dog.
