blueticks

Alright i want any information about the bluetick breed out there. How did they start? What were they breed for at first. Did blueticks use to belong to the english breed? what is the difference in blueticks and the english blue dogs. I guess those are just a few question that i can think of. Thanks for the help

BJ

bluetick coonhounds

The bluetick coonhounds came from england in the 1800s they were brought in this country for scent hounds while the blue tick breed was in england they used them for foxhounds the bluetick coonhound traced back far enough can be found in the walker and english line that meaning lets hear it for the bluedogs thats where it all started.

Blueticks are an old breed. Some say english and walker spawned off of blues. There is a good article in the last Bluetick Bloodlines about the origin of blues.

They've been around forever. The Bible makes reference to slow moving creatures.

I believe they actually say that the Blues and the Walkers spawned from the English hound.

Wrong.

The bluetick as we know it just became recognized in 1946 as the Bluetick Coonhound. Prior to that, they were registered as English Coonhounds. People liked the blue color and began breeding for it, and then pushed to have UKC recognize them as their own breed. This is why alot of Bluetick looking English are born...and why registered Blueticks can have anything from black blueticks, down to those all white ones. I've even seen brown blueticks.

The dogs that the bluetick fanciers refer to when trying to make their dog lines look ancient are the french hound, Bleu De Gascognes. These dogs were not houndy in appearance, and were not tree dogs. There is also little supporting evidence that they were used in the development of the modern coonhounds.

I like the look of a nice bluetick, but they were English hounds not long ago. I hope this helps.

Possibly I don't read much on blues so I might have misread it. The slow moving creatures is quite funny and true. Kinda like they mentioned pms in the bible. "Mary rode Joseph's ass the whole way to the city" .

blueticks

well guys I dont understand how you would say that the blues came from english hounds because ukc adopted the bluetick long before the english hound that means to me that the blue was here first.

Although rare, occasionally a blue english will appear in the winner's circle by getting off by itself and treeing an easy coon whereas the bluetick tends to get the winner's circle by babbling and me-tooing behind a quick treeing walker dog.

1st dogs

ok get with it people read a little now and then about the sport you love and know so little about. all dogs /hound came from english fox hounds. walkers came in to play by mr walker who used none running fox hounds that treed [in a nut shell] then they broke out into english coon hounds and walker coon hounds then came the split one more time from english red /blue and blues.

pa hunter, you may want to talk to doug robinson who is on this board. think he can help clear up the english bluetick reference for you.
the english coonhound came first. i believe the walker broke off the english first, then the blueticks broke off to make their own registration. if you go back far enough in any englsih dogs pedigree you'll find walker and bluetick in their pedigree. that's because they were all one breed at one time.

I'll take a crack at this...
when the next time your bluetick or english slick trees or runs deer all night, you can say that dang old walker blood must be kicking in tonight..

I new there had to be a reason for my pup to run deer other then she was not broke yet. her it is the walker in her. J/K Ok guys i kind of understand where they come from now. But if they all come form the same line then why do certain different traits show up in the different breeds?

Posted by BIGCASTLEDAWGS on 07-26-2007 02:48 PM:

SELECTIVE breeding...

... as we Humans do our selecting we breed out some stuff and breed in other stuff. As we line breed and inbreed more of the Old stuff will come back up to the surface. That is where the importance of Study before breeding and the use of GOOD outcrosses comes into play. I have NO knowledge as to the coonhound stuff...but I was a bird breeder and I Studied the genetics tons back then. Did the same with horses but...had no luck getting a foal here! I will not do it with coonhounds. It is too complicated for me but I am very interested in following it. Sincce Blueticks are my prefered variety I love to watch from the sideline. I SURE hope some day there is more cooperation and less fighting so we can see some amazing results. With ALL the varieties... not just the blues..........
Have fun, HappyHunting, Heather
