Ear Mites

WHAT IS THE VERY BEST SOLUTION TO EAR MITES? I KNOW THERE'S ALOT OF PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET, BUT WHAT IS THE BEST?

If it truelly is ear mites, then Ivermectin works well to kill them at .2mg/kg or .1cc per 10 pounds of 1% oral liquid given orally every 14 days for 2 months. I have also placed .5cc of this Ivermectin 1% in a 15ml bottle of Tresaderm and placed in the ears daily for 10 days, then every 10 days for 1 month. The Tresaderm clears up the wax and ear infection while the Ivermectin kills the ear mites. Great combination. Use Ivermectin orally every month to prevent the recurrance.

Problem is most people think there dog has ear mites when it really is just an ear infection. Until you actually see the mites, don't assume it is ear mites. Get it confirmed so that you can treat it with appropriate medications.

Ear mites

I hear that Eric's (Quail Hill ) works well .

I have done similar to Ahallada's suggestion. I keep a small bottle of Ear Rite Cleaner and have it doctored with a small amount of the 1% Ivomec. Clean the ears with this solution and kill two birds with one stone so to speak.

Only time my dogs are ever bothered by mites is when I try to use straw for bedding. In our area there is a mite that lives in the shaft of the straw and I have trouble every time I try to use straw . Quit using it a few years ago except for ocassional situations.

My vet

used Advantage swabbed in the ears for the female I got back (bad situation there) & it cleared her right up. I never had any trouble with the ears, so all I can tell you about is what the doctor did.

This was probably Advantix? Advantage (Imidicloprid) doesn't kill mites but Advantix has permethrin which will kill ear mites. You can also use the Frontline spray for this as well. Just place a few drops in the ear canal.

Yeah

I knew it was something that started with Advan....just figured it was Advantage, my vet is an old timer & isn't always clear in what he says or uses, but he is good & I like him alot.

I had gotten a kitten that had ear mites & he swabbed his ears with something that killed all the things, might have been the same thing, only for cats.

I have a young male that has ear problems. He had them when I bought him. I have tried pennicillin ( 3cc for about 7 days), swimmers ear med., every souloution available for ears, and nothing seems to help. I am almost positive it is some type of infection. He shakes his head alot. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Years ago when I was still a kid at home (many years ago) we had a female that had chronic ear problems bad . Worse ears I 've ever seen on a dog . Scar tissue was so thick in the dogs ears that they looked deformed . If I remember right she got quite a bit of tetracycline from time to time and cleanings with peroxide and treatments with panalog ointment. I hope my recollation is correct. This was some 35 or more years ago

You will need to determine if the infection is bacterial or fungal and then go from there on treatments.

Would probably take a culture to determine exact cause.

Hey Craig,

Are both ears infected or just one? What kind of food is this pup on right now?

I posted on your other thread. Sounds like this pup has some food allergy issues behind these ear problems though that needs to get cleared up. If she is a valuable pup, it may be worth it to get a referal to a veterinary dermatologist.
