DNA profile ????

How long does it typically take to get back a DNA certificate? I had a profile done on a dog 2 1/2 months ago and havent heard or received anything yet!

I had one take about 3 months and I had another come back in about 3 weeks. I guess it just depends on how backed up the lab is.

Ive wore the UKC lines out the last couple months, and to be honest, Im getting tired of footing the phone bill. Why they dont have a 800 number is beyond me!

I'ma gonna go out on a limb here & say UKC can only do so much so I doubt burnin up the phone line's ain'ta gonna help one bit till they get the result's back from the lab.

You know I think DNA is a good thing. Sure would help keep everyone honest on the papers.
If I remember right when we had our JetV pups DNA'D it was 5 weeks. Like Russ said Im sure they are busy and all and they will have to wait from the lab.

LOL, I guess I should clarify. I havent made a single call about the DNA profile, every call Ive made has been related to tracking down pedigree info, dog owners, wins, etc..... and EVERY time each person Ive spoke with has been EXTREMELY helpful and courteous! Im not ragging on UKC in the slightest way!

PKC DNA profile can be transferred over to UKC, or vice versa. Just have to copy the genetic profile thingy (yeah, that's the technical word for it!) they send you and pay a small fee. That takes just as long though. We sent a PKC profile in to UKC on a female last year. After four months of waiting I called and they had to send us a new UKC DNA paper showing she was profiled. Never got the first one they mailed.

JMO, every dog should be required to have a DNA profile done at registry. To much paper swapping going on. I've seen a plott around locally showing that I know has had it's paper pulled before. They've got new papers on it and showing it again.... so what happens when they breed it? Nothing will be right on the pups papers and someone will end up paying for one thing and getting another.

UKC used to send all DNA requests in a "batch" once a month. I was once told that if you sent the request in the day after they sent the batch....your request would set at UKC until they sent the next batch.

So.....if you get it back quickly, then you probably sent it in at the end of the wait cycle.....if you have to wait...then you sent it in at the beginning of the wait cycle.

Let me try to answer some of your questions about DNA.

If you send in a DNA Swab to be profiled, we say to allow 4-6 weeks for processing. If you send in a DNA Certification, where you send us a "copy the genetic profile thingy" (otherwise known as the DNA Certificate of Analysis from PKC or AKC....LOL) then the typical turnaround time for results is 3-4 weeks. Now, keep in mind, this does depend on the workload at the lab and in our office.

Batches of DNA are sent to the lab once a week (not once a month) on Thursdays. Oak Ridge is right...if we receive your request for DNA Profile or Certification on a Friday, it will have to wait to go with the next batch on Thursday of the following week.

Also, we do have a toll free number for DNA questions. The number is 1-888-548-7362. Remember it's for DNA questions only. Because it's a separate line, not directly related with the other incoming lines at UKC, a customer cannot be transferred to any other department at the United Kennel Club.

Huntaholic, if you want to call me with your dog's UKC number I'd be glad to check the status of your dog's DNA.

Hope this info helps!

Thanks Cindy! It was a pleasure speaking with you this afternoon! Unfortunately, it's not a UKC problem because they never received the DNA sample. It appears that the problem lies with my vet who took the sample or the USPS. Time to call the vet now and see what they have to say I reckon.

I just got off the phone with the vet and I get the feeling they are trying to pass the buck on this one. She told me they sent it off LAST WEEK, and I said "but this was done on May 16th!" She came up with some big excuse about having to wait on paperwork from UKC before sending it in and told me to call UKC again on Thursday and see if they got it yet. I get the feeling this DNA sample has been just laying around (in a freezer I hope) and they found it after I called the first time and just sent it in today. We shall see I guess.

Why dont you just Swave the dog yourself?

Hey, Richard! When I receive the sample, I'll be sure to let you know. We can always check the postmark date on the envelope to see if they are being truthful. Hopefully, we'll have the swab soon.

To save yourself some aggravation in the future, you could use Chiggers suggestion and swab the dog yourself and send it to me. This takes out the middle man.

Remember...anybody who wants to DNA a dog can do so at any of the major events where there's a UKC rep and we'd be glad to swab the dog for you. Another bonus...it's cheaper...only $35.

Cindy

Hey, Richard. Got the sample in with today's mail. If you give me a call, I can tell you what the date on the envelope was and also what date they actually ordered the swab from us.

Toll free DNA number is 1-888-548-7362. Give me a call when you get a chance.

We'll get to the bottom of this one way or another! Thanks for everything Cindy! Over the course of hunting these hounds, I've spoke with folks from all 3 major registries, and UKC is head and shoulders above the others when it comes to helping the houndsmen and women!
