kennel floors

I am about to put up two kennels and was wondering what my options are on flooring. I didn't really want to pour concrete, because I know that will be permanent and I know that we will only be at our house for another couple of years. I was thinking about either:

2ft x 2ft stepping stones placed together

sand

small gravel

mulch

Let me know what you think about these and if you have any other ideas!

Ive herd of people using mulch. Not sure if it would work but you can get a truck load of it for $10 at the garden center. Alot of people i know usu gravel too.

Sand that's what we use. Easy to clean. Comfortable for the dogs and safe.

Well we put the sand on the concrete and just dont over do it and it stays in the kennel. You get some mess but not a whole lot. It's easy to clean! Im sure railroad ties would work though.

Pour concrete and when you sell the place, tell prospective buyers they already have a floor for their NEW TOOL SHED!!

I used the patio paver blocks for a few years, way back when. They will keep dogs out of the mud for the most part, but they also trap odor and aren't the easiest to keep clean. I'd be concerned about any kind of loose material, for what it would trap, unless its completely removed and changed on a regular basis.

Build a wood deck, with spaced boards 1" apart. make it elevated so you can get a rake under it for cleaning. Then just bolt your kennel panels ontop and you're all set.

You can use a High grade of Treated Plywood, Then roll-on the New Garage floor paint or Use a Gal of Truck Bed Liner "Both Are Very Tough" and you can hose it all Down !! It will last 30 years !!

I would say sand is more comfortable on your dogs then gravel.
Sand is easier to clean out.
We clean our pins about every other day.
I'd say sand is cheaper.

I think that small gravel might just be the answer to my question. Since the kennels won't have a roof over them, I think that sand will be a big mess. The urine should run right through the gravel and the mess shouldn't be to hard to clean up on the gravel.

Anyone else have gravel as flooring in their kennels?

I had 3/4" gravel but it stunk to high heavens. It as also a pain to clean once the cold set in and the waste would freeze to the gravel. Thats when I went to wood planks. Alot easier to clean, I just bleach them and rinse them down. Just build em up so you can rake out underneath once or twice a year..and to throw lime under them, etc.

I prefer just plain old dirt floor, because it soaks op urin and is eaier to clean up the poop...I have found that dirt is just plain the best, plus the dog like it. when it is hot they can roll in dirt and keep the flys away!!! it is also ALOT cheaper.

They are way more likely to get any time of worms or disease though because they live in the ground or any type of bugs get on them easier.

im going with the stepping stone with sand under it.
the rubber mats are at tsc for 300-400 it was way to
much i guess you could call general rubber & plastic
in lexington & see what they had.as far as dog taking
a whiz in the kennel try hanging pvc pipe or something where he will
hike his leg on it or just turn them a loose every day
its not a lot of clean up if there is you better cull quick.

We have gravel in ours.. We get MUD in the winter time and we went to Lowes and bought that material that you put down in gardens (not the plastic) and then put the gravel over it.. It is fairly easy to clean, we used bigger gravel, we don't have a problem with any smell and I can hose it all down if I feel the need too.. I don't have a roof over the kennels and the gravel has held up to the snow, rain and mud...

I use sand,

& it's a breeze picking up the poop. I use one of those forks with the tines about an inch or less apart, that you see around horse barns, & all you get is the poop. I like the sand also because when it rains your not walking in mud. My 2 dogs poop over on one side of the pen away from the double dog house & the water bucket. Once a week I sprinkle cat box deoderizer made by Arm & Hammer on the side where they poop & I don't have that doggy smell that alot of people have.

I think the last thing I would use as a floor of a dog pen is concrete, it's hot in the summer time & cold as all get out in the winter. Just my opinion, but if you like it, use it.

Well guys, thanks for all of the resposes! I went and got the two kennels this afternoon and put them up and went with pea gravel as flooring. It looks pretty nice so far! I didn't get completly finished... it was getting dark on me. You should have seen me out there raking gravel with my belt light on...! My wife got this biggest kick out of me working with my hunting light on. Tomorrow night I should be able to finish the other side... gotta go back to Lowes and get a few more bags, it took more than I thought it would.

I've used concrete, smooth river rock, and rubber cow mats. They all worked well for me. It was more difficult to clean up feces on the river rock but it stayed very clean and the smooth edges were easy on the dogs feet. It sprayed off nice with a high pressure hose.

The cow mats worked well after I figured out how to do it. I paid about 50.00 each for mine in bulk from a friend in the dairy business and found a heavy tape to use to "seal" them together prior to putting the kennels over the top of them. You can also glue these mats together. We used it in our horse stalls and in our kennels and I highly recommend them. The ones I had were bacteriocidal also.

If you don't have to deal with snow then sand should work well and would be comfortable on their feet as well. It would be more difficult to control sand fleas however.

A friend of mine built modular kennels about 3 feet off the ground with the wood slats as mentioned above. The dogs were at the level of the pickup truck dog box when loading. They stayed super clean and was very easy to manage as well. He used 2x4s on end (not flat, but on 2" side), side by side about 1" apart from each other. There was no need to place wire over this however as the urine and poop ran right through the slots. You could probably use the newer synthetic 2x4s for this as well that would last longer and weather better. Might allow for an easy break down and moving. The sides and top was chain link and it was held up with 4x4s. I've also seen people frame it in and use their own heavy gauge wire or hog fence.

These kennels were about 4 feet high and 12 feet long and 4 feet wide. I liked this system as well and was probably the easiest to manage and clean. The dog house was one continous unit at the end of the kennel that ran the entire length. It had divisions inside the house between the kennels that could be removed for added space and slots for holding dog food and water. I think John Wick had a diagram of this kennel in one of his books. It was an off the ground modular kennel system. Looks kind of weird but it works well.
