want to comp hunt, but whats the deal

i have been told for couple years now my female would do good in comp hunts, I have went to a few with my walker buddies. why is there so much drama with hunting judges. I am not the kind of person that takes getting screwed over lightly. so i dont hunt comp. Is having your dogs name on the top of the leaders list that night really worth screwing over the other dogs and handlers. where is the respect of the other handlers and dogs. you want to hunt with these other people through the week but come comp night your looking for any reason scratch there dog so you can win the cast.

Hello Coonskinner,
I've been competition hunting for over 40 years. Most all the people that I know that competition hunt are great people and enjoy the fellowship and friendship of compition. My first question to you is "Why do you want to hunt competition???" If it's not for the fun, the sport, and the regognition for your dogs........ then get out and stay out. (Don't mean to put it so bluntly!) There are way to many people that are hunting competition that are not good for the sport. They included, but are not limited to: cheats, hot heads, smart mouths, and win-at-any-cost hunters.
If you can't make it fun, no matter the outcome, you are not good for the sport. I have been beat everyway there is possible. I've beat myself, my dog has beat himself (usually getting scratched for off game, LOL), I've been beat because I forgot a rule change, I been beat because I wasn't watching the time, I've been beat because I did not have enough dog power, I've been beat because some one else got lucky, I've been beat because I was too slow to call my dog, I've been beat because I was too fast to call my dog, AND YES, I have been beat by an unfair judge. BUT THE JUDGE SITUATION IS VERY< VERY< VERY< RARE. In every case you must learn to be a man of honor and character, accept and learn from your defeats and be ready to do better at the next one. If you can't loose well, then you will be a sorry winner as well.

wow, how come people can't just lose any more. They either got screwed or cheated. Maybe you are not as good as you think you are. just quit.

I have noticed usually people get "screwed" b/c they dont know their rules very good, they know the main rules but not the odd ones....Although I have been screwed more than once when rules weren't the problem and cast members were to scared to stand up to teh judge!! Comp hunting isnt for the faint of heart!!!

I have been all over this country and had a great time. Some you win and some you loose. The rules are on the back of every card and you can also question a call. If you have a problem look it up. I have noticed that the ones who allways get screwed are usually clueless to the rules and their dog is terrible. If you have a problem on every cast then there is usually a commen thing present...YOU!! I know people who have never won a cast either lack of dog power or they arent cut out to be a real good handler but they are at every hunt I go to and loving it meeting good people and making friends....Just remember if you never lost then winning wouldnt mean anything.... Good luck to all!! That reminds me LUCK yes Luck is involved as well but I believe alot of luck is where preparation and oppertunity meet. If you are prepared and the oppertunity to win is there then you more than likely will win. People now days never hunt their dogs unless at a hunt and wonder why they cant win. Michael Jordan had to practice. Anyway hate to vent but get tired of the same ol song and dance....I got cheated

The dogs might not be broke
but this coonhunter sure is.

ANY endeavour that does not allow you to stick by the ETHICS,VALUES, and "rules of life" that you were taught in life is NOT worth doing. This is definitely NOT a slam on comp. hunting nor the people who do it. I know MANY honest and fair folks who do it very sucessfully. I can't, I can't argue nor debate an issue of fairness, there is no GRAY in my thinking. This is probably to my detrement and I do realize this but can't change it.

As for "KNOW THE RULES" as areason(excuse) for a person to loose is not in line with my thinking. I DO think that ANY participant should DEFINITELY make ever effort to "KNOW THE RULES" and any shortcoming in this area should not be USED as a means to get someone to deliberately use this ignorance of a particular rule to create a "WINNING" situation over another. We, in my opinion should try to be gentlemen.

Case in point; We all expect to have the right/priviledge to carry on our daily activities like going to work and carrying on business without knowing ever law that has been adopted to keep the unethical ones in line. It would be rather unhandy to have to "KNOW THE LAW" and/or carry an attorney along everyday or be labeled a "whiner" or "looser".

Comp. hunts are part of life and those participants should be allowed the same privilidges.

"KNOW THE RULES" and use your knowledge to help rather than as a negative

AGAIN I do know many honest and fair people who KNOW THE RULES and are always helpful.

I really, really like to competition hunt. I like that maybe more than pleasure hunting. But you know what? I lose more than I win! Why? Well, if my dog does something he should be minused for, I minus him. If he should be scratched, I scratch him. 90% of the time I'm the hunting judge, and I could get by with cheating or whatever, but I don't. I also can't hear very good, so sometimes I don't hear the dogs until they are on the wood, if its a fast track and they really move it. I don't complain. I just have fun. Its lots of fun. Last Friday I was judge, my dog backed a Walker on a slick tree. Big old tree, probably could have got away with circling it, but I didn't. I was the judge, I decided to minus it. Thats hard to take, the first tree of the night minused. And yes, the dog mine back won 2nd in our cast, I won 3rd. You just have to love it.

PS I've never been screwed by somebody trying to beat me, I;ve been screwed a lot from my own dog, though.

If you hunt enough, You will screw yourself many more times than someone else. To me that hurts alot worse. Most guys I have met have been great guys. Even teaching the ropes to me.

ok i took time to read every single one of these post replys. I have a different view of what i was thinking. i meant no disrespect to any comp hunters and thank you all for your advice and knowledge. it sounds like i have been listening to a few wrong people. I do love my dogs and i do love to coon hunt. i do love meeting new friends and having a good time. so i hope to see you all this year in a comp somewhere down the line. I hope we have fun. thanks and good luck.

Competition Hunting

You will run into some really good people, and some really bad people in competition. But, this also applies to just about anything else you are involved in.

I think the most important thing is to know your dog well, and to know what it is doing, and to call it based on what it does. The ones that stress knowing the rules well are usually the reason that you need to know the rules well.

If you call your dog like he does it, and he does like you call him, you've done all you can honestly do. That's saying a lot though.

Years ago a young kid about 14 years old showed up at a hunt and I drew him in the cast I was judging. The kid needed a ride cause the guy he rode with drew another cast. I told him he could ride with me.On the way to the woods he told me he had never hunted in comp. before but had hunted all his life. He was asking a million questions, trying to learn the rules in twenty minutes. He told me his buddy had informed him that he was gonna "get an education tonight". I told the kid, who you could tell was very nervous, to calm down and just call his dog, dont worry about the rest. When your dog barks strike him. When you know he is treed, tree him. Nothing fancy and let the cards fall as they may. Let me tell ya, the kid was packin a real coondog! We definately got the education! I cant remember what the score was but I do know he plain put a woopin on all of us! He won the open registered hunt that night and went on to finish the dog into Gr.Nt.Ch. Ill not mention any names but today he is a pretty well known hunter and has never let me forget and thanks me everytime he see's me for the advise I give him that night. Kinda one of the few things in my life I feel pretty good about.
