? about silent track dog...
I have a young english dog that i started training, he will run track but is completely silent. but he will locate and tree and he is one heck of a tree dog, feet on the tree and chopping every breath, and is super loud. he's only been in the woods about 6 times and already treeing with other dogs, but will not open on track. and i turned a caged coon lose in front of him and watch him track it and tree it, but still no bark on track. does anybody have any ideas how to get him to open up on track. i really like this dog and had high hopes for him but i like to hear a dog work a track. i dont know if it matters but he is all chop mouth dog.
thanks, chris..

I wouldnt mess with any more cage coon or released coon. The dog just does not need it.It will only mess up a dog the more you do thuings like that.(How old is the dog??)..Many dogs are smart and just try to catch the coon on the ground. They seam to do it more on real hot tracks..Many dogs start off silent but open up .After they get coon bit once or twice..Ive owned dogs that were STONE silent until 2-3 years old before they ever opened up.Some became semi silent or wide open track dogs...

I'm going to give him time and see if he opens up. he only seen a caged coon once and was to see if he would open on a hot track.
This dog is real smart and quick learning, and easy to handle. the other night i ran him with a pup that babbles the whole time you cut her loose and he didn't bark one time until he treed. so i don't think he will be a babbling idiot. he only 14 months old, so he's still young he's got time to come around. I turned him loose with my bluetick down off a hill and with a full moon and i watch him work a track and he wasn't chasing my dog he had his nose on the ground and was working the creek like he was supposed to.
thanks, chris..

I never would have guessed your silent track dog would be bred like that. Do you know of any of his littermates that are silent too? I would hunt him by himself, if he gets on a good hard feeder track, in some ruff stuff, he just might open. I've seen dogs who are silent hunting with other dogs, and the same dogs open good on track by theirself.

i've hunted and bred many tight mouthed dogs. i had one that was completly silent at 13 months old and by around 2 he was real open. but that is really rare. if you hunt the dog 40 or 50 nights and it is tight still, then probably will remain that way. sure if you hunt a tight mouth dog in water or standing corn they will open more but will always be tight mouth.
Chris
That pup is bred up good! He would cross well on bought anything. I have seen dogs from different crosses but with some of the same ancestory that were tight mouthed. I have had a few Swamp rooster dogs that were silent track dogs.

Just Give Him Time
Swamp,
Just give him some time. Keep him off the red hot turn out tracks. Let him spend some time working tracks, esp. in some ruff stuff. Hunting him where he has to spend time looking for a track and then working that track from cold to running will really help him. He will start opening and using his trailing abilities, not just his heads up running ablility.

SILENT DOG
I BET YOU SEE PLENTY OF MEAT WITH HIM
What is it about silent dogs being the most gall-darned acurate out of any of them? And most times SUPER independant!

SILENT DOGS
THEY GOT SOMETHING BETWEEN THEIR EARS - A BRAIN AND THE ABILITY TO USE IT
here's my theory
a young dog that has plenty of brains and is using them to work out a track is too busy and is concentrating too hard to run his mouth. Once he gains some experience and doesn't have to figure everything out from scratch, he opens because he is relaxed enough to get excited. Its aggravating, but I think its a sign of a smart dog.
Of course, some dogs are just tight mouthed on track. And some dogs figure it out by learning from other dogs rather than figuring it out for themselves, and those are often wide open from the get-go. And we all love a pup that just is so excited he can't contain himself!
I have a dog that babbles his head off at events when he wants to get turned loose for the field trial, and goes silent as soon as he is working the track. Makes me the butt of a lot of jokes at field trials. But, when we hunt alone, he starts out silent.
At first, he was silent when pleasure-hunted alone, but is finally beginning to open on trail at almost three years old. One thing that seemed to help was talking to him while he was trailing--he seemed to need reminding that I wanted to know what he was doing. I'd call "Hey Clamour, what have you got?" and he'd respond, sounding impatient about the distraction, but clearly enough so I could tell whether he was on a warm trail or not. He didn't stay open, but he would answer when I asked. These days, I don't have to ask as often. He's not wide open, but I can at least tell whether he's trailing. If he doesn't have anything, he checks in at the sound of my voice or every twenty minutes or so. Not terribly helpful in a competition dog, but if you're trying to get a dog to open for your pleasure, might be worth a try.

I don't really like stone silent hounds but I sure don't like alot of mouth either. Just open enough so I know there direction. Everyone likes something different though. A silent dog sure can't comp. hunt or everyone will have your backside. Silent dog scratch him/her

Blue Iron I like that too in a dog. Layup ability/winding!
I don't see anything wrong with a dog thats semi silent though. Id prefer that over something open mouth!
