I would check his teeth. Sometimes if a hound has a bad tooth drinking cold water makes it hurt to bad and they will not drink.

Maybe your dog wont drink if your watching, Ive seen that happen. Could try 1/2 milk 1/2 water see if he drinks that.

We just had two of our hounds in surgery for GINGIVITIS (sp). They weren't drinking very much either. Doc says even moderate gingivitis build up will cause sensitivity. Look for tater like substance at the base of the teeth. Pink/red or even swollen gums. An abcess will be real swollen with an almost yellowish color to the gum. A cavity looks just like a human cavity. You can also check to see if any of them are loose, if the hound will allow you to. Could also be the fact the dog don't drink alot. Our Dancer drinks like she can never get enough, yet Smoke hardly drinks much at all. Try to give him/her some of that flavored pedialite (sp) you'll find it in the children's section at the drug/dept. store. Give it to him/her at room temp. Maybe that will help. Kinda slop your hands in it and rub it in his/her mouth as to getthe taste of it. Hope any of this helps.

J Hill:

Milk would work, I have even dissolved a couple beef or chicken boullion cubes in warm water. Some of it could be the fact he is getting enough from soaking the food, but you'd think he atleast drink a little bit?

Try putting some salt on the dogs food. The salt on the food will make them thirsty and therefore make them drink more.

One way or another he's getting a drink...he wouldnt be alive if he wasnt. He might be taking ice inside his box (I've seen that).

If he's Peeing....

... then he's drinking something. Is his pee real dark or normal? In the snow it's easy to see. If it's not dark then don't worry, he's getting enough water somewhere. I have had dogs, horses and chickens seem not to drink well... but then noticed they drink from the mudpuddle made when dumping the water to replace it with clean fresh water! Grrr!
Seriously, if he seems fine, eats, hunts etc... he's getting fluids somehow. He seriously could be shy about it. He may be eatting ice or snow. Maybe when he's out hunting he drinks a bit or running water from a stream.
Hope he's fine, HappyHunting! Heather

jim.....go to tractor supply or somewhere that sells the heated water buckets and get one. at least it will be there during the night if he wants some.......fill it all the way up and wait a few days to see if the water level goes down. he should be fine since you are soaking his food and giving him the can stuff. it's worth a shot.
