It all depends on how hard they are hunted.A dog hunted hard night after night is lucky to make 8years. A dog hunted 2-3 nights a week and well taken care of might go twelve years. I would say 10 is probably a good average.

i would have to go with 10 yrs also ...... round 8 yrs there will be alot of hounds that slows down but still have enough grit to put em up .........

Age

I 've got one that will be 11 in April. Granted I wish she was 5 again but I tell you she has done some darn good work this winter and made some young dogs look pretty bad . Just ask my hunting buddies! / LOL!!

I think alot of it has to with how well the dog was taken care of during its life. We have a 9 yr old now that looks like an old man but hunts and plays like a 3 yr old. This pic was taken after a paticularly good hunt 2-3 weeks ago.

my old dog died this year she was 13. We hunted her 14 times this season before she died. She was deaf and blind this year the boys wanted to know how we would catch her. wait till she is treed. She wouldn't know when the meat came out of the tree.
She died during the ice storm we had in Dec. I tried to leave her at home most nights but the neighbors would call and complain so alot of the times she just stayed in the truck . I think if they have the desire to hunt you should keepem going. probably like being put in a nursing home for people.

10 is a good average for there life time but coonhounds will hunt until theres nothing left in them

Here's Jebb, he just turned 10 last month and we hunt him a lot. The first guy who had him (he had him since he was a yearling) hunted him at least 5 days a week until he was 8 y/o. (I think it kept him young, lol) Then when my buddy got him he hunted him just as hard. He gave Jebb to us last year as he needed to make room for his B&T's. We've used him for pup training, for comp. hunts around here to help us learn the rules, and we've entered and won countless treeing contests and water races with him as a 9 y/o. He's a great dog and is still going like a 5 y/o. And in fact we will be getting a litter out of him on the 21st of this month, lol.

I would say average age is 11 or 12 years...

Average Age?

I think there are a lot of variables.

Genetics obviously is a factor. How they are cared for is a factor. What kind of shape they are kept in is a factor.

I also believe the climate a dog lives in is a factor. I believe the average lifespan would be lower in the deep south. I believe this would be because of the heat and bugs (disease-carriers).

Of course, the cold in the north can be tough. It's about 0 degrees here right now, and supposed to stay single digits to below 0 for the next 3-4 days. My 13 year old and 12 1/2 year old dogs are in the basement laying on the couch.

I typically expect a dog to have 12-14 healthy years (still able to hunt). That's largely held true for me over the years.

SMOKE IS GOING ON 8 YEARS OLD. I'M SURE THATS NOT CONSIDERED OLD TO SOME OF YA, BUT SOMETIMES I WONDER. IF THIS MEANS ANYTHING, SMOKE STILL PLAYS LIKE A PUP WHEN YA PULL OUT A TENNIS BALL OR TRY TO WIPE HIM OFF WITH A TOWEL HE WANTS TO PLAY TUG-OF-WAR. HE'S STILL THE FASTEST IN THE WOODS,(dancer gets him from time to time). HE'S BEEN ONE HECK OF A PUP TRAINER ALL THESE YEARS, BUT NOW IS STARTING TO GET A LITTLE GROWLY WITH ONE OF HIS FIRST OFF-SPRING ( 3 YEARS OLD).
HE'LL BE HUNTED AS LONG AS HIS HEALTH HOLDS OUT. HE HAS A PHYSICLE TWICE A YEAR, HIS LAST VET VISIT DOC SAID HE WAS THE PICTURE OF HEALTH, NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. THANK YOU GOD!! IF/WHEN HE DIES THIS WHOLE HOUSE WILL BE IN DEEP MOURNING. PROBABLY GET HIM TO THE TAXIDERMIST.
