5 yr. old in a bench show?

My 5yr. old girl Julia wants to know how to show her dog! The dog has never been in a show but has the breeding and the looks. Can you all tell her what to do? Dad dont know!

The best thing would probably be let her watch a bench show , its so much easier to be shown then told lol, if ya'll would be closer I would love to help, also there are some people that put vidoes together to show people how as well. also looking at some winner photos may help a little, as far as how they are set up. well I hope I helped a little lol, good luck!!!! ~Megan

Check around for a club or class. There's not much different about showing Coonhounds vs. other dogs. We went with our dog to an evening class and the cost was just $5 per dog. All the other people there were practicing for an upcoming AKC show with their little fuzzy lap dogs. But we got some really good tips and it was very helpful. A 4-H dog club in your area would be another place to look. Then she'd be in with other kids. I would get her in a situation where she can practice first before she tries the real thing, if you can.

Locate the nearest Coon Club to you. You could also look on this site for a Bench Show Judge that lives near you and maybe they would be willing to give her a "lesson or private class". As wonderfull as it is that she is so willing it takes a pretty tough little one to be able to compete against the adults. Keep letting her know practice is the key: ) I recomend using a choker chain and teach her how to keep it up around the dogs ears so she will have the most control over the dog. The dog has to stand to show it's bite, then just set one foot at a time. Tell her not to drag the foot or it may look flater than it actually may be. The dogs front feet should be straight line from the "withers". The back feet: from the Hocksdown should be a straight line too. Look at the Coonhound Bloodlines for bench show pics and see how they are set up, not all are right but it will give you an idea. I found a good diagram of the dog to explain body parts. When you are at UKC's main page go to hunting programs(it is to the left of message board) then look on the left side for glossery Conformation. Hope this helps more. Also watch for Youth events and another child could help a lot.

Thank You gals and guys for all your advice. I've been competition hunting for years, but have gotten out of it due to job changes. I am now able to get back into it, but remember your talking to a 5 year old who can read but not type. If you all can get her jazzed up, tell her how it is bygod she can take it!

I'd suggest going to UKC's main page and look under coonhounds and events. Find something near you and start letting her (and you) get a better understanding.
Theres several somewhat near you. We get up to Winterset, Boone, Missouri Valley, Ottesen and a few others several times a year. Iowas got quite a few clubs.
I'm not 100% sure but I think Cedar Rapids has a club. Thats fairly close too you.

I think we're actualy heading up there for it. I seen there is an ACHA show and hunt here in MO but I think we're heading to Iowa instead.

first of all i'm really glad that your daughter has decided to participate. i agree that you should take her to a few shows and let her watch and pay attention. take your dog with you but don't enter him. before and after the show you can usually ask people to help and they will show you how to set up the dog etc. even after the paperwork is done most judges are more than willing to give some advice.
but my best advice to give anyone starting out is this: you have to learn how to lose before you can learn how to win. no matter the outcome be gracious and always congratulate the winner even if you don't agree.
