Competition Hunters Help
I never really cared for the hunts much but it seems like anymore you really cant get your hands on the best bred pups unless you do. I kinda gave my word that I would hunt this pup in the hunts. I have hunted in a few and won some but I really am not a very good Handler. I was wondering which you thought was best agressively calling your dog or playing it safe. And any pointers would be appreciated. I know of one problem I must correct, meeting me at the tree. I think the rule stinks and needs to be changed by UKC. I mean it is stupid to have a rule where a dog can meet you a short distance and go back with no minus unless you are winning, then you get minused. But I will correct that problem. Do you try to get first tree or are you more careful to make sure your dog is right?

call your hound for what he does. and i will tell you this that first tree 125 looks good..........if it is right. i have better scores with first to strike 100 and a second , third, or fourth tree that were right. the score stays up and there is always the split that goes from 25 to 125 that helps! I am not a professed professional but, i have took some culls and put the heat on the pros. if you got a coon hound that can win, let him hunt the coon.......not you. the more you pay attention to what your hound is doing and not worry about what the other cast calls are, your handleing will get better! just my opinion. handlers and hounds regardless of what you read on here are not made over-night

Come on people drop you're ego and admitt you just got beat, made a bad call, dog made a mistake, what ever. You can't get cheated that much
Strike the dog when he opens, Tree him when he trees!
I owned a young dog with another guy once and he hunted
him in a few hunts and couldn't win a cast. He wanted me to handle him, said he kept making the wrong calls and screwing
up, said the dog should be NT. CH. already. I told him not
to try and handle the dog and worry what the other handlers
were doing, just call the dog. In a few more hunts he put
two firsts and a second place on the dog.

In UKC how long after dogs are cast do you have before you have to strike or is it imediately? Does UKC have a stationary rule? How long is it?

First of all if you are serious about the nite hunts learn the rules before you enter. I don't understand your comment about meeting you at the tree ,if you inform the judge before the hunt starts that your dog will meet you it is ok unless he\she does not return directly to the tree. Don't know what you mean minus if you are winning.
There is no time limit as to when your dog has to open. They should find a track before opening. They also should had a coon up before treeing but these last two seem to be optional anymore.

I am asking is there a time limit before you have to Strike him after they are first cast. Also asking if there is a Stationary rule. That is a rule that they have in pkc where if your dog barks treed, but you dont tree him, then they will put time on him, and you must tree in that alloted time or get minused or scratched. UKC used to not have this rule but I had heard that they were going to get it. I was wondering if they had or not. Thanks
