what makes a competition dog
ive been hunting ukc for a bout a year now and have done pretty good but yet i still havnt figured out what makes a real comp dog. i got a female that ive thought about hunting in them but shes not as fast on track as most of the comp dogs ive hunted.she wont tree a possum and wont run trash and has a hell of a nose but the dog is slower than hell on track,so what do yall think can i make her into a competition dog or not?

If it runs trees and has the meat it must be a WALKER.
If you cant be in the woods coonhunting you should be dreaming about it. If you cant dream about coonhunting then you should be were it all counts, in the woods.
RECORDS are broken FIRST is forever.
ACCORDING TO SOME ON HERE SLICK HANDLING...BUT MOST OF THE TIME IT IS JUST A CASE OF NOT ENOUGH COON DOG...A GOOD CONSISTENT COONDOG WILL WIN IN THE HUNTS..AND IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE ONE THAT CAN GET IT DONE...

I have hunted hunts for some time, (I LOVE THEM) and here is what makes a comp dog.
1. Will run and tree a coon and stay treed
2. Trees coons even when others trash
Your dog will do ok, just understand her fault and be paticient. Most handlers or dogs will manage to loose points as fast as they make them.
THERE IS NO DIFFERANCE BETWEEN A COON DOG AND A COMP DOG.
They both must run and tree a coon and stay there. PERIOD
I have heard people say oh there is a differance? Normally that means their dog has a whole that the hunts rules expose like milling at the tree, starting tracks and finishing them, not hunting hard ect......
Well Kid, a hound with a good nose and that is trash free is a real plus. A lot of dogs will blow past coons or be gone a lot of the cast trashing. Slow or no, if your dog will tree real coons behind the other dogs or while they are running trash she will win lots of casts. You won't know until you give her a chance.
thanks

1. independent
2. A Non-trash
3. Fast track Dog
4. Stay put Tree dog
5. Has to be accurate
6. Cant be ill tempered
That what a A+ competition dog usually is.....
First of all know the rules! Then if your dog can run and tree is not ill on the tree, hold pressure, then hunt her! The most Important thing is have FUN! You wont win every hunt but dont get upset. The more hunts you go to the more you you will learn!
It just takes time!

they can bump trash, as long as they switch over quick. Can't beat those on strike. but must tree and hold pressure.
