Outstanding Nite Hunt Dogs Reproducing Ability

I have heard that the true definition of a "Reproducer" is a dog that consistently reproduces dogs as good as or better than themselves. Every now and then, regardless of breed, a dog will come along that will do a good bit of winning on the National Level. Are these dogs, male or female, for the most part a freak of nature that have extra ordinary coon treeing ability or are there some that reproduce as good as or better than themselves on an above average basis?

I think the nite hunts have a lot more to do with the handler than the dog. Just my opinion.

THERE ARE SOME DOGS THAT NEVER HIT THE BIG TIMES THAT CAN REPRODUCE BETTER THAN SOME OF THESE HIGHLY ADVERTIZED STUD DOGS. WHAT EVER THEY ARE YOU CAN BET THAT THEY WILL ONLY REPRODUCE A SMALL PERCENTAGE THAT WILL EVER BE A COON DOG NO ATTER THE BRED.........REPRODUCERS PERCENTAGES ARE FIGURED BY THE CHAMPIONS A DOG HAS PRODUCED ...............IN THAT PERECENTAGE FIGURE THERE IS ONE THING ONE MUST LOOK HARD AT AND THAT IS HOW THAT DOG BECAME A CHAMPION...............BY HONESTY OR HOOK AND CROOK.........

I guess even with dogs that don't hit the big time but have that little extra when it comes to treeing coons, do they consistently reproduce as good as or better than themselves? From my limited experience, I think it is more the exception than the rule. JMO

Go back and look at how many world champions have produced a world champion. Or consistently produced above average performers.

Look to see how many Kentucky Derby winners have produced a Derby winner. Or consistently produced horses that get you to the pay window.

Outstanding reproducers, and outstanding performers are BOTH freaks of nature. Rarely if ever do they come in the same package.

Usually the producer is a close relative or contender with the performer.

Interesting feedback. Even the best laid plans executed with the best individual performers are no more likely to succeed than two mediocre run of the mill hounds paired up. Several folks who have been at this game a heck of a lot longer than myself have told me, "It's just a poke in the dark". I tip my hat to all the ladies & gentlemen who have put in the time & miles to take those Pokes in to the Dark and had success. Without all of their efforts I would not enjoy the old biscuit eaters I chase around today.

Dogs win hunts for a many reasons, not nessisarily because they have extra coon treeing ability.

A really good dog cant reproduce better than itself, its never happened and it never will.

I've got a nice 4year old Nt. ch male that I am really proud of. Due to my work schedule I am not able to hunt in the nite hunts. When he was a lot younger I did take the time off work and put him in a few hunts and made him a Nt.Ch real quick. A good hunting buddy has a nice 3 year old female that he wanted to breed to my dog. We made the cross. We had 5 females and 2 males. One male got killed by coyotes at about 4 mos old. All the others but one are running and treeing. The one male that is left will run and tree his own coon like an old dog. He treed three single and a hole in the ground the other night in the snow, by himself. The one female that I say is not running and treeing will run and tree house cats. These pups are now 9mos old. I dont know if this was just the right combination or if my male or maybe his female is a strong reproducer. Maybe it is just a one time fluke. I have a couple other local hunters planning on breeding their females to him so I guess we will find out if it is him or not. I have to agree, it is just a shot in the dark. Any of you breeders have any suggestions on how to find out if he is a good reproducer or not, other than what we are doing?

we have 3 stud dogs, my thoughts on this is

it takes that special female, or bloodline, like our tar dog he croses real good on lipper gyps, storm crosses good on seth bitchs (only one we have breed) thunder is crossing good on just about everything, but still have not found that special cross yet.

Come on people drop you're ego and admitt you just got beat, made a bad call, dog made a mistake, what ever.You can't get cheated that much

My male is out of Merchants bounty who is out of Lippers stylish Rank and the female we bred is out of Abbotts Bawling Rebel which I beleive is out of Ole Souths Stylish Rebel. Anyone know anything about these dogs or have any input on this cross?
