Turkey tree / score this one

Treed a big fine Tom Turkey the other night in a cast. Even ran a good race to do it. Tree had no dens or coon in it. I minused the tree.

How many of you have made a tree/trees with turkey in it? With the coon in the tree or with out mr. Bacon?

My good buddy n MOH Alan Fredricks pulled out the rule book on us. Turkeys are NOT off game

i have a tuff time with that rule.

if you can take plus for a dog treeing a layup, with no track you should be able to take minus for treeing a layup that is not a coon, if the dog hears the disturbance in th e tree and falls treed with no reason , MINUS/SCRATCH !! thats worse than getting fooled by a smart coon and treeing slick!!

Posted by mudcreek on 01-26-2007 04:10 AM:

Wouldn't anything that is not a coon be off game?

Posted by ronald schultz on 01-26-2007 04:16 AM:

i believe the reason ukc gave is that the turkey left NO track

?

I had a dog tree that had two coons in the tree. Ran a feeding track in and treed. Got to tree and there was a fresh dead truky at the bottom of tree with blood runing out and brest ate out of it.

I kinda felt the same way at first till I read the book. The theory behind Turkey not being off game is this and here is what I think happened in our case. Dogs run a good track out of hearing, we walk to the top n tree in. Two dogs are split treed 10 yards apart, one slick and one with turkey in it pretty close to a straight down TN bluff. These dogs pulled up short of the bluff and just so happened to have a turkey in one tree, mere accident.
UKC's theory is that birds dont count as off game, they never were on the ground to start with. If a dog trees with a coon and turkey it treed the coon. If it treed slick with a turkey in the tree the dog just treed slick, not the turkey. It all makes sence once you break it down that study the rule.

I have walked under thousands of turkeys without knowing they were in the trees,, I bet.

Gayle you sure this rule just changed? Tell us more, I'll be back this evening.

What do ya mean " they were never on the ground "?
They WALK in to a roost tree and then fly up.
I hear people talk about treeing squirrels that were down before/at dark. They're off game aren't they?
And if a dog trees a lay-up ( just off body scent ) he gets plused , don't he? So why can't they be held accountable for treeing a " lay-up " turkey?
Some people sure come up with some dandy excuses for their dogs ! LOL

I have treed coons in trees with turkeys in them several times. One time was on a night hunt. My dog was young, and I was impressed when she held tree (didn't miss a bark) when 1/2 of the turkeys flew away. Talk about a commotion. There was 2 coons in that tree.

A couple of my dogs treed one night & I couldn't find any coon. As I looked around there were 6 or 7 lumps in the surrounding trees. All big turkeys.
The dogs just seemed kinda nuts.
I couldn't get the dogs to leave the area & had to really push them off.
Never treed any since that night.

Ive treed a coon and had turkeys in the same tree before. Listen folks, as many turkeys as there are in some places, its hard to find a tree that DOESNT have one in it sometimes! MINUS if its slick, but not scratch! A turkey can and WILL fly into roost from as much as 1/2 mile away. Ive seen em do it lots of times. Turkey hunting is my one true passion, all the other hunting just fills in the downtime between seasons!

we are loaded with turkeys where I live, but I've never seen one that wouldn't fly off if a hard-treeing hound were underneath it. Was it a deaf turkey?

BIRDS OF A FEATHER

It is boththe official and general, but not overwhelming, cosensus that turkey are not considered off game in the judging of a tree dog. It seems logical that the basis for determining which game in a tree should be considered off game for tree dogs would lie in the fact of whether or not the animalin question was able to climb a tree if a animal is climbing a tree it is leaving scent that may temt a dog .although this obviosly includes a wide array of critters, a turkey is not one of them .At this time,United Kennel Club does not consider birds to be off game for coonhound.

I went to a tree a couple of weeks ago. My dog and my buddies were treeing like crazy. As we made it to the dogs turkeys came off making all kinds of racket. Both dogs shut up I dont know if they thought the coon jumped or all the racket scared them to death. We could'nt find the coon.Who knows we may just have high powered bird dogs.

Turkey's are skiddish........ They fly off easily........ Never thought in a million years........ that one would stick around with a dog barking up at it....... Just my thoughts........ I have only hunted and killed about 20 in my life time...... I know they get gone quick. I just find it hard to believe that one would stick around long enough for someone to get into the tree to score it and see him............... with a dog raising cane below him. JMO..............
