How windy is too windy to hunt?

I was just wondering in you all's opinion how windy is to windy to hunt? I was planning on going tonight and the forecast here is for winds to be 11-16 mph. I always thought anything under 10 was ok. Just want somke opinions.

I agree with that line of thought. I use trackers and all but too much wind I do not like.

When limbs are falling out of trees I pop me a big ol bowl of popcorn and plant myself at da house.

High winds and ice on the timber are the two most dangerous conditions we have here. Everywhere we hunt is timbered.

Well now Mr Teacher man that's 30 mph wind you're talking. I''ll stay at the house for less that that.

20-25 seems to be ok, but anything above 25 starts to get a little dangerous. The dogs should stay ahead of you if you go into the wind, if not you're asking for problems.

With tracking systems some guys seem to think it is never too windy to hunt. I know guys who will hunt in the wind unless limbs are falling then they'll call it quits. I personally hunt because I enjoy listening to a dog work, if it is too windy to hear my dog work then it is rather pointless to be out there. Maybe I'm not as tough as some others. Turning a dog out and then driving around in the pick up trying to find it with the tracker is not my idea of a good hunt. A lot of guys have dogs that hunt that way so they are used to hunting that way. No thanks.

I am sure hunting in any wind is just fine if you are treeing coon and finding your dogs. Personally however, I HATE hunting in the wind. I can't hear, its cold, and to me it is just no fun. Here in PA, we have lots of hills so more often than not, you get calm nights. I know when I lived more in the west, if you didn't hunt in the wind, you would never get to go.

I can't remember a "good" hunt I ever had in the wind, even if we did tree a coon. 15 mph is too much for me. Less than that I'll usually go on and hunt. Windy here tonight too, gonna be down in the teens I think. I'll take the couch and some tube tonight!!!!

how windy is to windy lol what kind of question is this really lol it's to windy when it's to windy where ya dont wanna go hunting does that answer sound right haha just messing now i like hearing dogs run also so it takes fun outta of when ya cant hear a hound but when your trying to get something ready to take to a hunt ya have to be ready for anything

Anything over 20 mph

Makes it hard to hear the dogs and makes me leary of walking around under trees to long. Had limbs and whole trees falling one night.Wind was 30-35 mph. Me and dogs both decided to head for the truck! 25mph is about max for me!

if you can find a big valley........ i hunted the ridges down by red wing minnesota on a night that had small craft advisories and gusts clocked at 60 mph with sustained winds around 45. treed a few. just a little while ago we had a wednesday night with 38 degrees which is nice here in mn in january, so i hunted despite wind blowing 25 to 35 and hunting in flat country. only two nights in january that i have had two plus trees and this was one of them.

I don't like alot of wind, but most of the time I've treed
more coons when there is some wind than on still nights.

Some of my best hunting was on windy nights. I am not talking about where it lays the trees near the ground winds but a steady breeze I always seem to tree me some coons. JMO!!!!!!!

Last night was too windy. 25 to 30 MPH wind and below zero temps. Decided to stay home.

With below zero temps, I'd be staying home too! The dogs may or may not be able to handle it. But, that's too cold for me!!! For me, when it gets into single digit temperatures, thats too cold!!!

Wind? I've never measured that. Where I'm at, the winds don't usually hit the hollows.

What I don't like is ice! It's hard to walk up and down hills if they're icy!

It was really blowing up here last night, but we got off the high ridges into some sheltered coves and treed two lay-ups, a miss, and had another long cold trail to a den. Seems like the coon had moved in the afternoon and then laid up when the wind got up.

It was windy enough up on top to make me nervous but OK down in the holes.

One of the few advantages to hunting in the mtns!

I have had alot of luck in the wind. No more than 25 mph gusts. Seems like the coon walk better when its blowing some. Yes you have to hunt smart but we have always tree'd some coon on the windy nights.
