Sport Mix?

Anybody feed SPORT MIX?

Posted by Poison on 01-13-2007 08:00 PM:

I fed the 26/18 premium blend for awhile, the dogs liked it and looked good also, but the feed store selling it was selling several brands and was always out when i needed some,so i switched to Black Gold.

I feed sportmix cant beat it for the $

Posted by RedMan on 01-13-2007 11:49 PM:

Swapped from Diamond to Sportmix almost 2 months ago. I use the 24/20 and the dogs have all put back on the weight and sleek look in their coats that they had lost with the last several bags of diamond I fed. If nothing changes I will keep them on this. I feed less and get less than half the stools in size and amount from them I was cleaning before.

With protein that high, you'll burn out their kidneys.

Posted by RedMan on 01-14-2007 01:42 PM:

I pay 13.25 per 50 here. I used to feed the 24/20 in diamond for about 6 yrs then a buddy talked me into tryin the maintenance yellow bag and I really liked it for about a year then it just went to crap for me within the last 3 bags. The texture and color changed completely and so did my dogs. My dogs got so poor on it I just wanted to up the ante a lil to get them back to where they should be. I got the sportmix and took about a week and a half to get them fully changed over and discarded the rest of the diamond. I may try sportmixs version of a maintenance feed in the near future, have heard from several round here recomend it as well, but for now I will stick with the 24/20. All I know is within a couple weeks after changing that the coats looked shinier and felt super soft, they are all putting weight back on while being run the same amount, their energy levels are way up, I feed about 1/4 less than what I was before and clean up 1/2 what I was before. Their overall demeanor (sp?) just seems better to me. Carried a couple back to the vet last week to show them to him after changing feed and he said it was daylight and dark as how they looked when I took them up their a couple months ago.

I'm glad to hear you're pleased with it. MY experience with that high of protein, we had a walker that we were feeding a protein at that level. I looked out in the kennel one day, he was laying in the snow with steam rising from him. Called my vet immediantly (he's on speed dial) he said the poor hound had gotten too hot, and if I continued to feed that high protein food, I could damage or even shut down his kidneys. I can't remember what brand the food was, but it was high in protein. Good luck to you.

I`ve got an old dog out of Dark BLue Delta Dash that will be 13 the 31st of this month and a Blue heeler that will be 14 the 2nd of next month. They `ve been on Ivomec all they`re lives and have never been fed anything less that 26% protien. I don`t know if they`re kidneys are working right or not, but the old suckers still act pretty good to me.

Had this dog been hunting right before you put him in the kennel? I have a hard time believing he got too hot sitting in a pen.

This is a new one on me. You would think all of those feed companies spending millions of dollars on research and development would have discovered this by now.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD TAKE YOUR VET OFF SPEED DIAL. IF THAT IS THE KIND OF ADVICE HE GIVES. OF COURSE I DOUBT SHOW DOGS WOULD NEED THE HIGH PROTEIN FEED IF JUST LAYING AROUND THE YARD ALL DAY.

I appologize, should have used these words, 'you could'. I can't remember what food that was though, it was probably 1997-98? The food looked like rabbit pellets. Had bought it at a local store that sold all kinds of stuff for hunting. This walker hound was the only one it did it to. Not trying to start an arguement, just my experience.
