Wondering why your hunting hasn't been good?

Well I found out last night why my hunting hasn't been very good. I talked to one trapper buddy of mine and he has caught 330 coons so far and a couple of his buddys have caught over 150 each all around my hunting area, i would say about a 15 mile square.

Everytime I get down about our lower coon population, I think about those guys in East Tenn., West Va., Western N.C. I remember the last year Walker Days was at Coumbia City. Some guy from N.C. told me he saw more coons dead along the road in Columbia City than he could treee in a month back home. It's not suppose to be easy!

Posted by Kenny Eads on 01-04-2007 07:13 PM:

Jim, I'm not looking for easy, I'm talking about trappers that don't have permission on the land but do have rights to trap road ditches and culverts at every bridge getting the majority of the coon.I don't kill many coon and when I do in season its very few and the ones I do kill I give to people who save them. I grew up with my dad trapping for us to get by in the winter and I don't have anything against trappers it just sucks that they can really clean out an area pretty quick with these numbers and these guys still have 7 weeks left.

i8 believe in 100 percent fare chase with hounds--- spotlighters also do alot to hurt population-- went to sell some coon and a guy had 18 coon he said he got in 2 nights-- i said you must have a nice dog-- he said i dont hunt with a hound i spotlight-- isnt that illegal in indiana?

Spotlighting coons is legal in Indiana. So is calling them with electronic callers. There is prolly some way to take coons in Indiana that ISN'T legal but I am not aware of it.

Posted by on 01-04-2007 09:54 PM:

It's illegal to harvest a coon in MN w/o being put at bay or treed by dogs in MN but I'd say the majority of non-trapped coon in MN are harvested by the help of good light. According to some known shiners in my area, It depends on how you interpet being put at bay or treed by dogs.
I'd also say that most of these good "honest" coonhunters are taking a few coon the dog isn't under.
Not much we can do about it.
I'd like to see the coon harvest season in MN be from Nov 1st to Dec 31st as long as the deer season is shortened and pushed back that would be alright too. JMO.

I hunt & trap.I tend to trap where I wouldnt think of running a dog.Lot of my coon are trapped alive in footholds & cage traps & then brought home to get double duty training a young dog.& I am here to tell ya some coon cant be treed(at least on the outside) & some coon cant be trapped. There is always some seed in a barn, under a old building & houses or chimneys.Lotta coon in towns around here. There is enough for everybody. We cant have em all to ourselves.Nice as it sounds automobiles & disease take many.Hawks & owls are hard on the young till they are pretty big.Fisher are moving in up north & guys are talking about lower populations.Farmers are poisioning & live trapping them yr around in some places near their stock & crops. These things outside hunting & trapping are going on all yr.without a season.Shiners, shooting them out of season to train a young dog, trappers, farmers, drivers, predators, disease, ect lot of thing to hate I guess?Lotta dumb coon are dead this time of yr.Takes a better dog & alott more patience & time to get a coon this time of yr.Deer seem to dissapear after the 1st few days of season, they get smart or get dead.

Guys that Trap

Guys that trapped around here 20 years ago and haven't trapped for a few years are breaking back out their traps this year because of the slight increase in fur prices . Theyre catching alot of coon but they say they are catching more bobs then ever before also . I know one fellow who has caught 6 bobcats in the last 3 weeks. A couple of them were pretty dang big !!

I don't hear them talk about catching as many mink as they used to though.

trapping whats the sport in it,are hides worth that much this year that a person has to take 330 of them no sport in it if you ask me.
when they were worth 30 to 40 dollars it was understandable but still no sport in it.

Guys let me rephrase this for Jim

"It is Legal to headlight and kill a coon on foot."

"But it is Illegal to Spotlight or headlight a coon from a vehicle if there is a weapon within the vehicle."

And a weapon can be a gun,knife,club,bullet,etc...

And hopefully the Electronic coon squaller will soon be illegal in the state of Indiana!!!!!!!!!!!!

People enjoy trapping just as much as we enjoy running our hounds. Its not about us fighting each other.

Go buy a few footholds and go make some sets and find out what sports in it. Becoming a good trapper is just as hard as making a good dog. Probably harder. There is nothing wrong with trapping as they have just as much right to furbearers as we do. So I say quit bickering back and forth, work with them and they will work with us. The last thing we need is to lose BOTH rights to hunt and trap because of a pastime drawn apart by disagreement as to who owns the coon population.

I just started this post in reply to a thread that was on hear a few days or week ago about tough hunting right now. I believe trappers should have just as much right to the coons as we do. Trapping is not easy never has been and never will be. It takes alot of effort to catch 300 coon by traps and have a full time job(he's a brick layer during the day). These guys have been trappers since they were kids and are very good at what they do.The only bad part is most ,not all trappers take all coon they trap big and small. I wish they would atleast leave the small ones.

Our season opened in the middle of November and we still have 7 weeks left.

Kenny- There are two kinds of liars in this world,coonhunters/trappers and fishermen. Regardless of what these experts tell you on here, THE MOON HAS A PROFOUND AFFECT ON RACCOONS THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. BEWARE OF THOSE EXPERTS AROUND JEFF CITY. Might have an opening tonite or tomorrow. Will know after 2:00.

Moon or no moon when you kill that many coon out of one area you got most of them. The bad thing is they don't trap a few and leave they leave the traps untill nothing is there then go. Completely wiping out an area is not right with dogs, traps, spotting or what ever. Kenny and I hunt alot and our dogs are not the best but I have treed several coon and I know my dog. It isn't a matter of a better dog it is a matter of lack of coon. When you don't see coon crossing the road or coon sitting up while hunting then there just are not many around. There may be a few but not many. The last time I took my old dog out he came back in twice and anyone who knows my dog will tell you he doesn't check in on a regular basis to say the least. I don't care if people trap or what but maybe there should be a limit on how many can be taken. I'm not for rules and regulations either but I really don't like tring to run a young dog and make something out of him and the places you have permission to hunt is trapped from the road by people who don't have permission to be there. Last time I checked I had to pay property tax all the way to the road so people shouldn't be able to get on your property leagly without permission. Sorry to ruffel any feathers but we don't kill many coon and I would like for there to be some to chase if I want to go hunting.

I will agree to a point. Go to a trapping site and say this. 220's in buckets kill many dogs. Most trappers that use conibears could care less weather they kill your dog or not. Put out a couple hundred conibears and they don't worry about stakes being pulled. I set jaw traps a few places and got one of my dogs out of a 1 1/2 coil this year with no problem, saw a coon in his trap a few feet down the bank.. Left it for the trapper. Ask them not to set 220's because it may kill a dog and you'll be told to stick it up you know what. I should have taken the coon and all the traps because they weren't supposed to be there.
