Bench Show
I'm wanting to try to show my dog this year at local club by the house. Well i was wondering if anyone has info that would help my. Right now I have trouble with his re-end. He wants to tuck it and hide it. Also with his back legs its hard to get them line up and keep them there. I know its not going to happen over night. I have a month to go. So any info, thanks a million !!!!
It's hard to explain from behind a keyboard. Is your hound a pup? I'm sure if you go to a few shows, and practice with him on the bench, there would be some handlers that that would be glad to help you. I myself will be at 3 differant shows this month, Brewster, Cadiz and New Philly. If you happen to be at any of these, I'd be glad to help... here's just a thought, try making your hand into a 'U' shape, primarily the thumb and middle finger. Cup the 'U' shape around his belly, between the abdomin and his 'man parts', poke slightly upwards. As for his feet/hind legs, NEVER! drag his feet on the carpet. Place them one at a time into the position where you want them. This will take alot of practice, I've had pups that absolutely hate to have their back feet touched, and will pick them up everytime I place them. Have patience, it will come. Be consistant with your training, just a few minutes every evening is plenty of training for a pup....Good Luck!

Good advice redneck_girl! The only other thing I would say is try holding your hand or arm under his belly just in front of his back legs so as he tries to move he cant. If you try to pinch him he may get worse as it sounds like he is just scared and not sure of what you are trying to do. Each time he tries to move use a soothing voice say no and put his feet back. Remember to control his head If the head moves the whole body will move. Try having kids or other people touch him while he is set up as he goes. Another thing I have found with some dogs, not all is if you crouch down on your knees they are not as timid either and they will let you place each of their feet. BE SURE AS SOON AS HE HAS IT RIGHT FOR A FEW SECONDS TO QUIT! You do not want to over do... so end on a good note. Practice and patients is key. Best of luck. Sandi
Good morning Sandi, you're also right, I forgot about the 'on the knees thing', now that I think about it, I always am crouched down on my knees or dang close!! BTW, NightRunner, like Sandi said....ALWAYS!!!! keep one hand under his muzzle to steady his head, at least until he knows what it is you want. My Dancer was a really quick learner, now I pretty much just have to tell her...."okay Princess, show mommy pretties...."she's arrogant almost to a fault!! If she sees the camera taking her pic, I really don't have to touch her!! It is quite comical. I've really had fun with her...now her son is starting to act like her....love it!!!

Bench Shows
Thanks for giving me help. But I've been working with him between 10 to 20 mins. before i go to work. Today he did well, better. Yeah i've been getting on my knees, so that might be why i might have alittle trouble. But today i let the house dogs out to run in the back yard while i worked with him, I notice he would watch them and i could set him up really good. The day before i tired giving him cheese when he did good, BUT he smelled the cheese and it was on. LOL... So i had to just give him the cheese and quit for the day. I have a month to go for an event. It will be my first time. He is a 1 1/2 yrs old. I KNOW I'm starting late to work him for this but i guess it dont hurt to try.
never too late, it will just take a bit longer. Keep practicing and he will come around. Good Luck at your show! Sandi
in my opion you are starting him at the right age.
you should be bigger and stronger than most
of your comp.
I can get his front set up really good but I'm still having trouble with his rear end. He isnt sinking his butt as much as he was. But isnt his rear legs suspose to be straight and locked ? Blueticking IT: What do you mean i should be bigger and stronger than my Comp. ? He is 65 lbs. built really nice. His hine quarters is all muscle. You can see them when he is just standing there. He was pushing 70 sum but he is losing weight since i'm hunting him.
he is older more mature.
how does a dog come up on his front feet?
he push up using the rear legs so he could
be pushing so hard as he is learning his back
end is sliping around just keep working him
it may click.
