What's the best dog food for the $$$$?
Just wondering what everyone thought on this topic?
Definitely Black Gold, and I'm not just sayin this because they are my sponsor, because I've tried just about everything in the past, and Black Gold keeps the dogs healthy lookin, a nice shiny coat, ya don't have to feed them that much, we feed each of ours 2 cups a day, and ya don't spend hours cleanin lots if ya know what I mean!!!
Hmmmm.
I like Purina brand pet foods. Purina has a Pro Club, in which, you can save the proofs of purchases to obtain rebate checks to cut down the cost of your dog food expenses. Purina also sponsers some of are prestigous Coonhound events and is not afraid to mention coonhunters and their sport in their monthly publications. Purina is backed by top nutritionists whom are constantly working to improve the quality of dog food that top hounds desire. I feed Purina Dog Chow in the summer months, and I feed the Hi Pro in the winter to encourage optimum results in my hounds.

If I had feelings, that might would have hurt.
I feed sportmix- maintenance and am having good results. My dogs actually look better than when I was feeding purina. Not to mention not nearly as much clean up time. Plus I'm only paying like $10 or $11 for it at 50#

I'm paying 13.50 for Black Gold. Who makes this Sportmix?
TCB
PURINA
Fed Pro Plan, Black Gold, and Diamond. Here Pro Plan is $35 for 37.5 lbs, Daimond $ 22 for 50 lbs, Black Gold $ 17 for 50 lbs. We have a new supplier of Hi-Standard and it's running me $12.50 for 50 lbs. All these prices are for 26-18 % feed. I'm feeding less, less clean up and the hounds are in as good or even better shape. I buy 20 bags a month and that's a savings of $90 a month=over $1000 a year over Black Gold which was the last feed I have fed.

I think the TOPIC IS AWFUL. lol Why because it depends on where you live and how much you pay for the food at your location. Like Old Timer pointed out there is a big difference in the price of feed. I think Diamond is one of the better feeds made but at $20 a bag here it is not the best for the MONEY.
PKC is only $13.50 a bag and is not a better feed in my opinion but does a good job with the dogs and is better for the money.

I feed and like Exceed Lamb and Rice sold by Sam's Club. It is comparable to Purina Pro Plan Lamb and Rice, but it is only 19.95 a bag. Then to add to the savings they started a discount program much like Purina has. I haven't figured what I am paying a bag yet with the new discount, but I know I am feeding less and shoveling less. I do have to be careful not to feed them the same if I should slow down on the hunting.

Its hard to beat Purina.
We were just wondering....
We have fed Black Gold, and the dogs did really well on it, but with only one paycheck and a 2 year old, it's a little out of the price range. My dad has gotten into some deal with Purina where after you buy like 800lbs, you get it for so much a bag or something like that. We've just went in 1/2ers with him. Before, we couldn't get Hank to gain any weight, he looked like a bean pole, ask Coondawg, he saw him. He's such a beautiful dog now, you wouldn't believe it was the same dog. I think that we're going to stay with Purina for the big dogs, but I dont think that we'll ever feed anything other that Diamond to our puppies. It's $$$, but the pups are worth it.
Best food for $$$
Purina is best for $$ or nutrition. Join the Pro Club and get alot for your $$. Dog chow 50# bag $14.95 at wall mart, less $7.00 saving from pro club cirtifcate= $7.95 a bag. Hi pro $15.99 a bag, less the $7.00 pro club savings= $8.99a bag. Compare those prices to BlackGold or Diamond at $16.00 to $18.00 a bag='s a huge savings for a quality dog food , PURINA'S NO.1 Quality & $$ Keep-um Blue!!!!!!

With Out a Doubt
PURINA is the best for the money in my opinion. I feed Hi-Pro and split the $7 check on 2 50lb bags and they only cost me $13.50 a bag, now for those I'm running hard and traveling with due to the stress I move up to Performance..........and I don't know what some are saying but when it comes to no mess, than this is the dog food, pricey but well worth it and it don't take much to keep a good dog up with it at 30/20 and based on the fact that Purina has an independit research center, licensed and checked by the FDA its research is REAL, and FACTUAL, none of this we tested it and this is the outcome......true facts and the staff of Vets they have are some of the best in the country.
My first reply is why does anyone feed a dog food that the company does nothing for our sport?????????
Personally I think feed what works for you but support a company that supports YOUR sport, I know of only a few that do this, and they should get our support.
My second reply is why mess with the rest when you can fed the BEST....lol
Purina is my choice and always will be

My preference is Hyland Pride, not Coonhunters Pride. Made by the same company, but different line of feed. Found it to be the best value for the money and dogs do expectionally well on it.
You can check out their website: http://www.thepridedogfood.com. Excellent ingredients and good "varieties" levels of feed.
I feed 1-2 50 lb. bags per month (2 hounds) so a buck a bag cheaper or cleanup isn't a big deal to me. At the low volumes I feed, I won't get a sponsorship or a discount or get in a Pro club.
Diamond keeps them in good shape and doesn't take alot to do it, so it would get my vote for the best bang for the buck. If I had to switch, I'd probably go to Black Gold or Purina.
Feeds
I have been a true blue Black Gold fan for a couple years after trying it and seeing what it did to improve the condition of my dogs. However.... Rising costs in my area and availability, I just can't find dealers that handle it ,have forced me to switch.
I have gone to the PRIDE feed and been just as equally satisfied with it. I pay 15.00 retail for 50 #'s and don't have to go far to get it as one of the more successful breeders in our area is a dealer and always has plenty on hand.
Another thing I like about it is that it is produced right here in my own state of Ky. and I talked to a fellow last year at Autumn Oaks who was telling me that it is an employee owned company and he seemed very interestd in what others thought of the feed and wanted input from people that use the product.
He was just a regular employee and a hunter who I just happened to spark a conversation with and I was impressed with his concern for what others thought about the product he helped to create. He was not there in any official way with a booth or anything but was just there on his own time and I just happened to start a conversation with him about tracking systems when he mention feeds.
I have seen no difference at all going from Black Gold to Pride feed and would reccomend it to anyone.
I agree that we should support those that support us when we can but my dogs just seem to have looser stools and more mess in the runs when they have been on Purina feeds.Although I must say I haven't used the rice formula's
I also like that The Pride uses no artifical coloring in their feed.
And Bruce is right ....availability and cost are somewhat controlled by the area of the country you are in.

Anyone who thinks that purina is the best feed for the money is getting it a lot cheaper than I can get it for. Around here dog chow and puppy chow are priced reasonably, but have way too much corn in them for me to feed them. Pro Plan is way out of what I would call the value price range, and I'm not a fan of Hi Pro because I like to feed a higher fat content. I have fed Hi Pro in the past, but you can't keep weight on a hard to keep dog with a fat content that low. If I could affor Pro Plan maybe I'd try it, but on a working man's budget Black Gold is hard to beat. Diamond is a good dog food, but I don't notice a lot of difference in how my dogs did on Diamond and how they do on Black Gold, and Black Gold is far less expensive in this area. Plus look at all the hunters that Black Gold Sponsors. They are pouring some money in to coonhunting too. Look at all the stud dog ads that have the Black Gold logo on them, and the Black Gold hunt series in PKC.
I agree with ya'll that area affects the price of the feed. I was feeding purina puppy chow and then I moved up to dog chow. I am feeding 7 dogs and 3 of those I have got on self feeders. With purina I would spend an hour an a half everday cleaning my kennel. I switched to sportmix maintenance because of the hot weather we have down here in Bama. I have found that now I spend about 30 to 45 min cleaning each day now. I belive we should support companys that support us however I can't afford it as purina and black gold is a good bit higher here. This winter I plan on trying some different feeds but for summer time I'm gonna be feeding sportmix maintenance from now on. How bout all us guys that are feeding stuff from companys that aren't putting money into our sport lets get after our respective companys and see if we can get them involed. What ya'll think???
