When Is the Illinois Coon Season?

I may be coming up to Illinois, around Mattoon, in a few days.

When does the season open? If it is open when I come I may bring a hound and try to hook up for a hunt.

Not sure what zone Mattoon is in,

but I think they are in the Southern Zone? If they are in the Southern Zone, the season comes in Nov. 10th. The Northern Zone opens Nov. 5th.

I'm guessing that you will be traveling on I-70, but if your down this way, give me a ring & we will turn them loose awhile. I'm about 60, miles southeast of St. Louis

Hope this helped you out some????

Almost forgot to tell you, that we have a closed training season from Nov. 1st. to Nov. 10th. What this means is, that we are not supposed to hunt during this period.

Thanks John.

Yes, that does help.

I think I will maybe delay my trip if I can until the season open up. I'd like to go a little round up in your neck of the woods.

How far from Ed Brown are you?

I haven't walked with Ed since Old Twister was a two year old back in Oklahoma.

You'll be getting real close to Ed,

he's about 40 miles or so from Effingham, where you would turn north on I-57, to go to Mattoon. He's just off of I-70 as you go toward Terre Haute, Ind.

John Carroll,

you rascal, you better not come up here to mattoon without comming down and hunting with Rosemary and I. We are about 40 miles south east of mattoon and our season comes in on the 10th. We would love to have you folks stay and take a hunt with us. Maybe Ol' John Wittenborn could make it up, we would have a blast. We took a short hunt last night, treed one, then had to get the Mrs. home as she had to go to work this morning. Course, I had a full day, holding the recliner down, it's a rough job, but somebodys got to do it. Our phone # is 217-826-5612, call me and get directions.

Thanks, Mark.

I'll try and get up there to look at your hounds while I am there.

That's really too bad about season opening dates. Here in Ohio it opens on Nov 10th as well. Since the 10th is Friday morning we lose a whole week of good hunting! Would be nice to thin the litter coon out earlier and get some good tracking for the pups. I think the ODNR should take a look at opening coon a week earlier instead of making provisions for its deer seasons. (not bashing deer, just think they could help us coonhunters out a bit more)

A 10 day layoff in Illinois. Never heard of such a thing. What exactly are they trying to accomplish?
