THE COONS WE HAVE HERE IS SC ARENT REALLY BIG ENOUGH TO BRING MORE THAN A COUPLE OF DOLLARS A PIECE AND THEY DONT GET THE NICE WINTER COATS OF THOSE UP NORTH. THEREFORE MAKING OUR HIDES NOT WORTH MUCH.

we are getting 14.00$ up here for a big prime coon. At least that is what I get from my buyer. $17.00 if I scrape and stretch it.

Define prime for us in all aspects!

Posted by Larry Atherton on 10-12-2006 03:14 PM:

The best and easiest way to decribe prime is by the color of the skin or leather as some may call it. Any pelt that has a blue hue to it isn't prime, and is referred to as a blue coon. A prime pelt's leather will have good light tan color to it.

Take a pelt of each sample above and lay them on the floor and examine the fur quality. You will see a difference.

Coons in Michigan typically don't start to show primeness until November. Diet is as important as any one factor that determines when pelts get prime. Any fur buyer who gives too much for early October coons will not be in the business long. As a rule, I only shoot coons for pely harvest after November 1st.

There used to be a market for southern coon pelts. The buyers asked that the pelts be stretched square, but I don't know if they still do that. I look at coons as a resource and try to utilize them as such.

lil koon your best bet would be to find someone around that eats the meat. and sell them a few on the side.
