Hunting Judges........pros and cons

I am sure this subject has been discussed, and probably cussed a few times, but I haven't seen any discussion on it.

A good, honest friend was hunting in some level of the world hunt, and was leading the cast. His dog treed a coon, and he found the coon right away. For some other reason the other cast members could not see it. The time expired for the coon to be seen, tree was scored, and then ( all of a sudden ) they all saw it.
Would non-hunting judges prevent something like that from happening, or is there nothing that can be done.

I've had a couple of friends to experience this on hunts, and it kinda burned them out ( up too). Maby that's just the way it is and nothing can be done about it. Years ago there were more non hunting judges and it seems like it would have to be fairer.

Show me the light, and explain it to me. I don't competetion hunt, but would enjoy it I know. THe few hunts I have hunted in were good. Most of the time drew out with good boys, except the night my dog led the cast. Once he got in the lead ( Gr.Nt.CH. CHief's Blue Jake) the other guys were out to get him.

Here is my take on it. I used to judge alot when there were non-hunting judges on ch casts. I liked doing it. Problem was, there were never enough guys that liked doing it. What you ended up with was someones kid judging 4 grown men. If everyone got along, it wasnt a big deal. The kid just wrote the score down. If everyone didnt get along, it got kinda hairy. Some poor kid got caught in the middle.

Fast forward to now. Most of the time you at least end up with a good hunter holding the card. Can it backfire and you get a cheater? sure. I see alot less problems now though. It all depends on who the club gives the card. Most guys are pretty fair.


I can think of 2 in perticular who were known for being pretty slick in the old days. Now days they are pretty calm unless someone is trying to pull a fast one on them. Then they get a handling lesson. Usualy breaks them pretty fast.

if someone doesn't want to see it nothing will work but a laser pointer helps a lot.

An honest non-hunting judge is great. A non-hunting judge that is a cheat and has a buddy on the cast is also bad.

I was wondering if a hunting judge with something to gain or lose would be a disadvantage to the other cast members.
I am sure a crook, hunting or not, could be a problem.

Some times coon are hard to see.But hunting judges should not me used in a world hunt nor should hunting guides as there are to many ways to cheat.

Guides can have a big advantage. Take for example, tall fences that you are aware of and other hunters are not. You are ahead and don't want to tree a coon. Send the hounds into an area with lots of doser piles where coon don't have to climb or no coon in the area.

I agree with blueticker, you should have non hunting guides and judges at the world hunt. But it would put a hardship on a local club to have to provide nonhunting judges for all casts. The club I am a member at, we usuallly only have about 5 or 6 members show up at a hunt and it would be hard to put on a hunt with each cast having a nonhunting judge with no more active members than we have.
