Lessons learned

Moral of the story: if someone tells you to watch out and you don't quite hear them. Don't let them shut the door on you until you find out what they said.

Well, Saturday night was a very eventful night. First I was along on a cast to help guide. The tracks weren't too good, but the sportsmenship was. We ended up finishing the cast about midnight. I had parked my truck at Dave Oswald's house. If any of you have seen Dave's driveway ya'all know it looks like a mud bog. When I parked my 2-wheel drive truck I swear I hit my head on the top of my cab, and I had my truck sideways at least once.

Anyway, the cast is over, and I am in a big hurry to go cut a pup loose. The problem was now there was one more truck in the driveway on my right. As I am climbing into my truck, I hear Dave yell at me. Larry watch out for the ..... box. He then said bye and shut his door. I knew Dave was in a hurry too to talk boo-dawg politics with a host of boo-dawg follwers from our cast. Well, I make the poor assumption that ole Dave said mailbox. Now the careful kind of guy that I am, I roll down my window and size up the situation. There is the pickup to my right and slightly behind me. Now where is that mail box? Hmmmm ... I don't see a mail box. I am sure Dave said, "watch out for the mailbox." Hmmm ... maybe all those years of drinking too many Coke products just have Dave talking a little faster than usual. I look one more final time for that awol mail box. Nope no mail box in sight.

So the fateful moment arrives, I start the ole truck, ease her into gear, and hit the gas. Now remember this is a mud bog. So I didn't just hit the gas, I hit the gas! Both tires spinning in the mess as the truck suddeningly gets some traction. I think I hit my head on the top of the cab again as the rear of the truck starts to go sideways. Yep, ya guessed it right towards the other truck. I ease up on the gas a little bit while straightening the tires, and I hit that gas again! WHOP! I am at a dead stand still. What the heck happened????? I get out in ankle deep water and mud and head to the back of the truck. What do i see? A phone box jammed under and inside my bumper.

Uhhhhhh ... Dave must have said watch out for the phone box. Well, that explains why I didn't see any mail boxes. It is a good think that those boo-dawg guys tolerate this holstein lover because if they hadn't got me unstuck I would still be there. Now while all this may not sound too trying let me assure you when Nikki realized I hit her phone box and her Nextel service may be interrupted, I was wanting to put as much distance between me and that darn phone box as possible.

Sorry Dave and Nikki, I hope the Nextel Nazi's were as understanding as you two were with me. The big question is I am still welcome? If so, I promise to supply the Dew.lol

Hope she simmers down before you, or I for that matter, runns into her again.

ROFL @ Larry. Great story Larry. I hope there was no damage to your truck and the now famous "PHONE" box will live. Nicki and I counted up the phone box victoms, you made number six. I wish you would have told about the super human ticker strength you witnessed getting your truck lifted off that box lol. Dave

Kevin,

All my buddies had 4 -wheel drives straight out of high school. The things we did to those poor trucks was much worse than any truck commercial ad guy could ever dream about.

After several years of digging and pulling trucks out of some of the most absurd spots that still boggle my imagination, I have come to the conclusion that 4 wheel drive actually impairs the judgement of most men.lol

Hobo,

It is Larry Luck.lol

My dad always said the same thing, he never did have a 4wd truck. By the time I bought one after I graduated, he actually had me convinced that I needed to be careful. My general rule is, I don't go through it if I don't think I can make it in 2wd. I use 4wd to get me out of those few times I misjudge. It is handy on snow and ice though, but you have to remember it don't help you stop. lol Now my Suburban had 4wd and anti lock brakes. It makes driving on ice much easier than it used to be.

The only time I should use mine is in reverse, seems going in four wheel drive forward is asking for trouble. Most of the time I get stuck there aint a tree around to winch to either.
