Are there any good Curs in the Northeast?

I've owned hounds for 15+ years. Raised, trained and competed plenty. Had NTCH GRNTCH, GRSHCH, won 3 different State Nite Hunt Championships, ect... I'm not new to the game I guess is the point I'm trying to get across. I have sold all but 1 of my hounds, which should be sold this week. I am looking to do something different and am looking for a well bred cur pup. I know NOTHING about curs other than what I have seen on the net. Are there any in the Northeast? What I would like to do is run this dog on fishercat, yeah I know most of you don't even know what a fisher is, lol. A fisher is a big, extremely quick, stinky, tree climbing animal that will run like the wind. Has an attitude of a badger and kills just to kill. They average about 25lbs I guess. Their hides were bringing in about $100 bucks a piece last year and from what I read a cur just might fit the bill to get them treed. Can anybody out there help me locate a pup? Thanks for any help. How thick is the fisher population in your neck of the woods? I assume that hunting fishers may be similar to hunting northern MN bobcats? ????
What are tracking conditions like when you are hunting fishers?
When hunting with hounds did you ever tree a fisher?

I'm just curious. Maybe a faulkner or leopard cur would fit the bill for the job but I'm no expert.

The fisher population depending where you go is pretty good. The F&G Dept has increased the limits in the last couple of years so they must be doing pretty well. You can find them anywhere around here. Pretty much we run them when the snow is on the ground in big pine/Hemlock forests. I use to have a walker hound out of Loomacres Jasper that would tree fisher like a pro. He didnt say alot on track when he ran them and was super fast. Also had a black & tan that did a pretty good job but opened more on track so the runs were longer. Where can I find a cur that'll handle a fisher? Thanks. wd

i have no idea. i'm trying to find a cur that would suit me just as a coondog!
but from what you're saying it sound like you would need a dog with a decent nose and tracking ability so I'd avoid some of the hot-nosed pop up type curs.

I lived in a heavy fisher population and never had a dog tree one...i'd probably stick with a hound on them, but there might be curs that would tree one but it would take awhile to find one...

I think your right about sticking with a hound. I've had plenty that would tree them, one treed them like a pro. Thanks for the input. wd

go to sqdog.com and try there. They have cur's and fiest's and both are used for treeing. I'm sure that someone on there will be able to help you find someone close to you with cur's.

get yourself a ladner blackmouth cur had one that would catch n kill fishers first one he caught i thought he was killing a woman it screamed so loud and much. also the dog was excelent at chasing them thru the trees (timbering)and treeing when he stopped wich wasnt much fishers are faster then squirrels and can really fly thru the trees never had them here in ct.till recently now theres a good population around me anyway im in connecticut and i have two 6 month old ladner curs that are really turning it on now birds,mice,chipmunks,squirrels,rabbits,coon,snakes
, turtles,cats and anything else that moves were really havin alot of fun with these pups thanks brian

Find somebody in your area and hunt with the different types of curs and find what suits you the best. IF you need help finding somebody in your area let me know and I will see what I can do.

Wayne, look up Townsend Dunlavy, his MT curs are heavy Kemmer, Sugar Mt. I think he's in Arkansas? Really good coon and cat dogs. He also uses them to site chase and kill coyote. If you can find a way to get them from him to us I'll take one too and split the cost 50/50.
