What do you think about Amazing Curs?

I was just wondering how you guys feel about Kovac's Amazing Curs and / or treeing curs in general?
I'm searching for the type a dog just like what they describe in their ads. Something with more nose, mouth and treeing ability than most curs but something that handles better and has more brains than a hound.
Just curious if they are producing dogs like they describe in their ad.
I have enjoy Walkers, Plotts, and I own a cur. I like a little from each breed but I have yet to find the right dog.

Sounds like you might be describing a breed I have been hunting for almost 30 years now. I hunt leopard curs. I hunted against the Copper dog 1 time from Kovac's. That has been several years ago. We treed some coons that night.

Everyone wants to breed to hounds .... hunt against hounds ... beat the hounds ... that says it all.

Not all hounds are retarded .... only the ones that have an owner who lets them stay .

I am a hound guy. I've hunted with hounds my whole life. I own a cur that is the sorriest hunting dog I've ever seen.
BUT I really don't care for all the things going on in the hound world right now. I am a pleasure hunter first and foremost. I go to nitehunts for the fellowship. I enjoy hunting and talking with other people who have the same passions as I do.
I can count on one hand how many hounds in 3 years of guiding/judging/competing i'd care to own.
The way we are losing hunting ground and the type of areas I hunt, I think a treeing cur (if they are close to as they describe) would suit me.

i've never hunted with any of the kovacs' dogs or dogs from their line, but i did talk to Alex on the phone one day for about an hour about his dogs, and dogs in general. from that conversation alone, i would say he is one of the more honest guys i've ever talked to in the dog world. i would say 99 percent of the dog people i have talked to have been out for themselves, (but maybe i've just been unlucky in my dealings), but i would say that if Alex Kovac tells you something, that's the way it's gonna be.

There are 4th and 5th generation Amazing Curs being hunted all over the country. These dogs are definitely reproducing themselves and are making Sq. and Coon champions. They offer the best of both worlds, hounds and curs.

if i am not mistaken, i read an article in which the Kovac's said the best results of there breeding was a Rat Attack X Cur cross....as far as developing there own breed and hunting them in that manner for generations i do not know....i am thinking this was when they first started the hound/ cur crossing......someone can correct me if i am wrong....it has been a while since i read it

i think you could get some nice hunting dogs by doing this and would get a variety of close, medium and wide range dogs....for different types of hunting...areas and game

I believe according to Kovaks web site that the dog they used as foundation way back when was a half walker half cur dog. They got a pretty good website and good pictures.

I think the Ratt cross was good, but i've heard good on X factor and he's out of X junior

Trott , I tried quite a few curs ... hunted with a half cur / half B&T that was top notch when I was hunting her ... as good as any dog that ever lived .

You're right about that cur you put off on Lewis .... she should have been shot instead of passed on down the line .

If a guy likes hounds , but just not stupid hounds or deep going hounds ... then he will be happiest finding a smart and medium hunting hound .

i had an amazing cur she hunted nutts like a hound. bred her to my buddies walker that was out of handsom hank on the top and nailer bred on bottom. pups turned out good. infact amay owns 2 of them herself. amazing paige and amazing kate. don;t know alex all that well but as far as ray he he will tell u how it is. he is probly the most honest and knowelgible man i have ever talked to about dogs.

Brogy i have seen some curs that act like you described. Just find the right breeder and you can find some with a lot of drive. One reason i think mine hunt hard is because i hunt them with hounds a lot. Good luck. Tommy Trott.

I raised my kemmer / streak bred cur with hounds. She has always been hunted with hounds but she doesn't hold a candle to the dumbest hounds out there. She frustrates the heck out of me. She is the most intelligent dog I've ever owned. I've never seen a dog that is so athletic and can move thru the woods over all types of terrain with grace and speed , but she has never treed a coon on her own. She will back my old dog and my buddy's dog.
A friend of mine has 2 Mtn View curs, that he just let run loose on his farm and they were treeing game at a young age and they will stay treed for hours until he goes and gets them after he gets out of milking in the barn. Those 2 curs just seem to have it and where naturals. He also had a litter from his mtn view male and a walker female. Those pups are also naturals.
I think a treeing cur (hound x cur), leopard, or faulkner cur would suit me best but I like the idea of the treeing curs because of being able to breed the best of almost any breed into a line of dogs and still be able to register them as treeing curs. Leopard curs sound like nice dogs but I personally don't care for the looks of post of the pics I've seen of them. Not that looks matter much, but I do have to look at them every day so I prefer a brindle colored dog.

I have had the best luck with Mtn. Curs being the most natural treedogs i have owned. I still hunt hounds and enjoy them. The down part to curs for me is the mouth. They are not hounds and they are not as loud. But even the culls usually tree. Like anything the total package is hard to find in any breed if you are hard to please. I have the same expectations out of my curs as hounds, which is get through the woods, get treed, be accurate and stay treed. The thing i enjoy about my old mtn cur is his ability to find coon. I can try to help yo find a breeder close to you. The main thing is have high expectations of them. Trott.

Just wanted to say that we are always willing to take anyone hunting who would like to see the dogs in action. We are on our 7th generations of these dogs and have been very happy with our results.

You are correct that our foundation gyp was 1/2 walker (Deep River Mike) crossed onto a Stephens Cur. We line bred for many, many years before going back to the hound aspect.

These dogs are consistent, good and bred to reproduce, but as in all things they are only as good as the people behind them and we've been very lucky with the people we've had get behind them.

I would say the Amazing Curs have stood the test very well. From what I have seen they will hold their own with any strain of cur going!

Amazing...

I own and hunt a sister to Alex's Shamrock dog. Queenie is a very balanced squirrel dog that can flat tree and handles like a cur is suppose to. She is a medium hunter, super gritty hard tree dog that can find squirrels using her eyes, ears, and nose.
If I can handle the road trip then next time she is in heat she will be bred to the X-factor dog.
