What ever happen to Sportmanship

I have a guestion ?
what happen to sportmanship and being friendly ?
I have only been in coonhunting a couple of years and am far from knowing it all.
but I have noticed in the few years that sportmanship seems to be fading ,
I have seen other coonhunters instead of trying to help someone learn put the person down and make fun of them instead of trying to help the person learn .
I was always taught that the greatest thing a person can do is to help another .
but lately all I am seeing is people running others into the ground and being mean .
I know there are good coonhunters out there believe I have met some of them but it really burns me when I see the others .
Don't they remember when they were new to the sport and someone helped them out it would be alot better to help them to run them in the ground after all they are the ones who will keep the sport going .
Sorry for venting but it just really burns me to see this happening

I agree with you it's just to bad that some coonhunters want to hassle and pick on newbies instead of helping them .
you think that they would want the sport to prosper and grow with new hunters .
I have seen hunters give youth and women hunters a hard time and if they stop and think about it they have just as much right as we do to hunt and show etc . why make it a unpleasant experience for them heck who knows they might end up to be a really good trainer or shower or both .
all I am saying is that maybe some of these people should stop and think if they helped instead of hindered they would get alot farther in the sport cause of getting a reputation of helping not being a mean person .
good word spreads better then bad ones

I'd bet that if you looked around your area, you'd find hunters that would be happy to have a younger hunter to go hunting with them on a pretty regular basis.

Think positively

One night years ago I was coonhunting with a friend and I remarked that the area where we cut the dogs loose looked and smelled like a snake area. He replied, "Are you snake hunting or coonhunting?" I didn't see a single snake that night. My friend had experienced undesirable behavior at coonhound events through the years - even had his top coondog stolen by a local dog trader. But his positive attitude about life and people brought him many successful and enjoyable hunts because he treated others the way he EXPECTED them to treat him. He saw the good in people. I believe there are mostly honest, good sportsmen participating at our events. Sometimes forums like this tend to take on the same facade as other media - making a lot out of negative situations and making them seem sensational. Yes, I've experienced more than my share of costly episodes with some low lifes in the coonhound world, but there are so many more GOOD people participating at coonhound events, they make everything worthwhile.

Sportmanship

I have seen sportsmanship in some of the hunters but I have also seen them treat female handlers and youth pretty darn rough and rude . they should be happy that both youth and females are interested in coonhunting both in the field and in showing .
I always treat people like I would want them to treat me but that does'nt always work in todays world you can be sweet as pie to some people and still get vinager in return .
or you get someone who is nice to your face but talks behind your back about you

I was supposed to hunt hounds for an old timer with bad knees (mom wouldn't let me have my own) Well he never called me back, and lateron I heard the reason was because he was afraid I'd hunt other dogs on all "his woods". This is just terrible.

Im 18 now got a nice truck and have hounds (they aint much) but anytime anybody wants to go they're more than welcome. If the seats fill up they can load in the bed. Whether they're 8 or 80 male or female. I think coonhuntin' is something everyone should experience it's just a shame there are too many bad experiences.

I had the chance last night to hunt at one off the best clubs ive ever been to . The hunt was the Old Dominion Classic Childrens Benefit Hunt Danville VA. We as visitors and non club members where made to fill Very wellcome. The guide put us on coon my female and the Judges where within 25 of each other all night the judge minused himself when his dog moved problley 25 yds in deep I did not pick up on it and that allowed us to win the cast and get a second place Sportsmanship is still around dont give up yet.By the way a 8yr old kid handling a dog got 1st and high score of hunt Mike Cayton Timberlake Kennels also if you bring a COON DOG to the hunts you will win your share

SPORTSMANSHIP

I hunted last night at the Belton, Texas RQE. We had a great hunt.
In my cast we had an old man (me), Victor Husey, a middle aged fellow (who had only been back in hunting a few years, excellent sportsman and very pleasent to hunt with), Ben Eubanks, a yound man in his 20's ( excellent young man, great manners, and well taught by an older hunter by the name of David Warpole), and Kenny Gleenwood, an older teenager (very nice young man with good attitude, great manners, and a good hunter, most probably taught by his dad). This is the way our sport should be every time we go to the show ring or the woods.
A couple of years ago I interviewed an older hunter, Jim Snodgrass, for an article in the BBCHA Bluebook. Jim said something I will never forget. "Cull the dogs for the sake of the breeds, cull the hunters for the sake of the sport". With a little "culling" in both areas, our sport will be just fine.
If they don't act like gentlemen and ladies, "cull them" and send them to the truck.

I will always be as sportmanship as possible sometimes things do get the best of me but that is human nature I try to treat others as I would want treated.
I'm nothing special just a newbie but who knows maybe I'll be as good as alot of the fine hunters and showers I have met on here .
I will just keep on trying and learning from all of you .
I know that sportmanship is still alive and out there it just breaks my heart to not see it happen like it use to

there are some rude people out there. but im kind of new to huntin too but have had all good experiences with the people ive met. talked to a couple of good guys on here that i hunt with now and met alot of nice people at plott days(dont hunt plotts, just went to the hunt) but bout everyone i talk to is glad to let me come hunt if i want to. but its too bad you have had some bad experiences. but stay with it and you will meet alot of good people and have some good times.

sportsmanship

I have been the wife of a dedicated coonhunter for several years and am thankful that this sport helped to mold our son into a respectful young man. He began hunting when he was a young teen and loved going to the hunts and listening to all the stories. However, when he was placed into a cast with a hunter that wanted to win at all costs...even to intimidate a young hunter...this behaviour took the fun out of it for our son and he lost interest in competition hunting. This behavior works in all aspects of the coonhunting world. Whether it be in the woods or with show people. If someone is trying to do something nice and beneficial to the sport, be appreciative and try to "go with the flow".

there is still some , saw a little last night

had a cast with 2 young men i would guess around 20- 25?? (i'll post there names if i find them out)and another 13 yrs. old and myself ,well i'm not as young as them. first drop i didnt follow the rules( maybe now is where this should end???) but i knew what was going on and felt i did what was right?? the youngest was hunting a dog for his neighbor that cant get around good enough to comp. hunt. the dog has a sqealy mouth , the dog i was hunting sounds VERY similar and we commented before the turnout AND 3RD MEMBER SAID HIS DID TOO , SO THE LITTLE MAN IS STRESSIN !! his strikes fisrt and quick he is hesitating (heres the cheating ) it was more than 3 barks and the other guys mentioned it but when they realized it was the younger they let it go. against the rules ,YES!! sports manship YES!! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>fortunately we got to look at a possum for 2 dogs and mine got in there and found out what they were up to and she thought O'BOOOYY YOU GUYS ARE IN TROUBLE and flat out quit and waited for us to get there, she was like aahhh yea boss i'm here but i didnt do it! so mmy miss judging didnt affect the hunt . the redbone left got her legit win, by hunting the rest on her own
