UKC and FCI merging?

Hi Sara,

Sorry to bring the Presa/Dogo politics into this forum, but I read this on another message board:

"But lest ye Forget, if the FCI merger goes through with the UKC, then brother guesswhat you will have! Thats right, Dogo Canarios"

Is this in any way true? Is the UKC planning on merging with the FCI?

Thanks for your help! Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

We are working to align with the FCI simply so our dogs can be shown in international dog shows, no other reason. Our standards will remain our standards.

Wayne Cavanaugh, our president, flew out to Wisconsin to attend a meeting recently. It's slow going as you can guess. He's also working on some kind of alliance with CKC.

CKC?

Please tell me that's the Canadian Kennel Club so I don't have heart failure here!

Yes Canadian Kennel Club. Scared ya didn't we?

Only momentarily....

Sara-
I'm not sure if you've been aware of the problems in Canada with the AE's and the CKC to this point. Apparently the CKC takes in new breeds by vote of the "members". When such a vote takes place, CKC must have more than 50% of the members return ballots and then more than 50% of those voting have to be in favor of accepting the new breeds. If those two criteria are not met, it takes a few years before they can bring the question back to the members. To date, it is my understanding at least, there have been two votes on the AE's at CKC. Not over 50% of the voting members have returned ballots either time BUT more than 50% of those returning ballots have voted in favor of accepting the AE's. Would the "alliance" you are talking about make this voting issue a mute point? Acceptance by CKC of the AE's is really crucial to our breed and our Canadian counterpart breeders. This would be a huge leap forward for them and our breed.

Wayne wasn't targeting any specific breed but rather acceptance of all our breeds. I can't really discuss much more than this right now. Please be assured that Wayne is working for you.

can you answer this?

How does UKC expect to handle those breeds that are not recoginzed under the FCI such as the American Bulldog, American Pit Bull Terrier and the Presa Canario? Or is this proposed recognition only for those breeds FCI does accept?

thanks in advance

Posted by on 07-25-2003 08:20 PM:

We'd like FCI to accept all our breeds. They will most likely judge dogs according to the standards they already have. If that conflicts with a UKC standard, we are not interested in c hanging ours. We would settle for FCI recognizing the UKC registered breeds we have in common if that's all we could get. I don't want to raise anyone's hopes. There has been no agreement. At least they are entertaining us. It wasn't that many years ago when Fred Miller flew down to Jamaica (I think it was Jamaica) to meet with FCI and they wouldn't even let him in their meeting. They have since allowed Cindy Cooke, Connie Miller and Wayne into their meetings and have spoken with Wayne on several occasions. Cross your fingers!

Thank you for your reply.

So are you only speaking of a reciprocal agreement on paperwork rather than UKC actually joining the FCI union?

If FCI would accept all the UKC breeds, would UKC in turn then accept all FCI breeds into the organization?

At this time the FCI has such an agreement to recognize the AKC as the registration body for the United States. Are you trying to replace AKC or have FCI accept 2 bodies within 1 country? I met Mr. Crowley a recently in Mexico, also there to observe and sit in on talks with FCI officials regarding the AKC's status in the FCI. I personally believe that point systems and standards will forever keep the United States from joining FCI, but one can continue to hope.

Posted by on 07-28-2003 03:08 PM:

We don't wish to replace AKC. We simply would like the same arrangement. This country is big enough to support two registries. FCI currently recognizes only one registry in each country. We want to convince them to have two.

You raise an interesting question. Would we want to be totally accepted by FCI? Have the same arrangements other countries have? I don't think so. That would mean adopting FCI Standards. That is the problem with both registries. We do not want to change our Standards.
