feeding dogs before hunting

would like to have thoughts on feeding dogs before taking them hunting thanks for any input

Depends. Do you feed once a day or twice a day? If you feed once a day and it’s in the evening just before you go, I wouldn’t do that. I’d wait until after you get home and feed the dog light or wait and feed in the morning after dog has rested.

Some of it depends on what you feed too. Cheap dog food blows up to twice its size or more when it soaks up water which can cause bloat. Especially if the dog gulps its food down. Dogs that wolf their food down in seconds are apt to suck in air into their stomachs as well which can increase the risk of bloat.

Been through the bloat thing. It’s horrible. I was able to save mine with the help of a vet. I switched to feeding twice a day and high quality dog food and never had it happen again. Been 38 years since that happened this coming Sept.

I think a scoop of food after hunting is a nice way for them to end the night ( I know it is for me ).

No I wouldn’t feed or recommend feeding before hunting. I feed mine anywhere from 6AM - 8AM. And usually if I run one hard I will give them a scoop of feed when we get back from hunting.
