If I were going to hunt Walkers, I'd find some old-line Finley River blood.

favorite line....

though everyone knows the "wild" line it would not exist if it was not for bozo, flag or finley river. The majority of walkers today will still show finley river in 6 generations. Bozo produced some of the best all around hounds ever and will always remain my favorite.

Strains

I'm always amazed when people discuss "strains" of Walkers within the breed. So many of these so called strains can be traced back to a few dominate hounds within the breed such as Finley River Chief and Finley River Dan and the descendants of James Merchants Bawling Barney. No doubt Bozo has had his impact and in no way do I mean to take anything away from him but let's look at where he came from. A son of the old Hickory Nut Harry who was sired by Merchant's Bawling Barney. Boone himself goes back to both Barney and Finley River Chief. The Sackett hounds go back to the Yadkin River dogs if I'm not mistaken and I think they go back to Sailor.
Now a couple others that I think also have made a tremendous impact are River Bend Flag,Johnson's Banjo, and House Chief.
It appears to me that James Merchant and Joe House should get alot of the credit for alot of the so called strains of Walkers of today.
I would be interested to know what other's think might constitute a "Strain" or "Line" within the Walker breed because I seem to be held up in a time warp. Some will say that after six or seven generations you will get almost no genetic help from these older hounds from the past but I can't help but wonder how House Lipper would have existed without Tom and Chief and Joe House ,or how Bozo would have been bozo without Harry and would Harry have been harry without Bawling Barney,and James Merchant.
I wouldn't dare leave this thread without mentioning one of the founding fathers of the breed ...Lester NANCE!!
Again.. I would be interested in learning more about what you think constitutes a "strain " within the breed.

yup jeff h. you got a real good point there. if i had to answer what a strain is ill say anybody that is hunting 4-5 generations of hounds they bred has a good start on their own strain. even lester nance and joe house started with somebody elses strain. i didnt vote. almost voted lipper... if it wasnt for joe house or lester nance i wouldnt have any dogs . thats for sure.. most of my dogs go back to johnsons banjo.. my favorite strain is marble mtn walkers. they are just a collection of work guys did before me. ive got about 20 years invested. and thats the strain i have now. anyways im interested in hearing about strains of walkers with a little extra speed and nose.. particularly big game hounds. anybody hunting big game with sacket jr dogs. ? ive heard some good things about them. im interested in fast , cold nosed ,loud hounds.. i like a dog that isnt afraid to bark on a track.. i dont want ugly tree dogs. anybody know of some great ones e-mail me or call. especially interested in hearing from cat and bear hunters.. pete

ok viewed results. i see poor old lipper needed help so went back and voted for him. i only hunted 4 dogs out of lipper. two were junk. two were as goodas they get.. the good ones were lipper and cedar hill sass.. anybody got some of that blood. moonshiner sassy? i have a ton of lipper blood in my dogs though most is from grandsons and great grandsons.. , id like to hear of any who have lipper x mikkisikc creek tabitha or cedar hil sass up fairly close.. pete

or, in the old days, the Hershberger bred Walkers.......most of mine were naturally straight, and could move a very bad, cold track well.........and stay put tree dogs.....best dogs I have had lately.....Yadkin River for nose and trailing ability...but some are a pain to break............Lone Pine for being straight from the get go.......(some aren't even bad on coon).

Who owned "other" ? I never heard of him? Based on current two favorite hounds I vote Flag and Rock River.

Pete, you know way more about the big game Walker dogs than I do but if I was searching out a prospect for a cat dog to run in Michigan's snow country, from what I've seen, it would be a Rock River dog.

Ok, fellas, I know I don't belong in this poll, as I am a English fan, but...I haveta hunt & show the other half's giant Beagle type things, so I do believe that gives me a bit of insight here. His first Walker he had was double Boone bred & in my book, tops. The male he has now is Razor on top & Stylish Sandy on bottom, which makes him River Bend Flag/Finley River on top & Lipper on bottom. I love him to pieces. The 2 females we have at the moment are both Boone bred. I like the pup, she got brains & beauty, the other female I did like...til she got the bright idear to attack my chickens! Needless to say, she is up for adoption!!!! The 'girls' are my pets & none of the other dogs bother them. She did & she is 'out the door'! K, got my 2 cents worth in & now I will go back to my corner.

Gayle I hunt lone pine bred dogs, grew up in PA just down the Road from Lee Logan and Ted Varshine, I have male dog out of Cassey (Best hound I ever owned) and a female out of Thunders Wilde clyde, she has been in 3 hunts with a 1st and a 2nd, my 15 year old son hunted her in one and had the cast won but lost her on a time out and the one hour got her or she would have been a nite champ in 3 straight hunts.

I have also owned a couple Spring Creek Rock bred dogs but like my old black headed walkers the best.

one of the best dogs i have owned was directly out of uplingers joe. i have one now jazz she red head but she all clover on top 4 gen and double sackett on bottom she a real nice dog and has done so much for me at such an earlie age. i also own a fem named Angel she all clover on bottom 4 generation all grand nite top and bottom and tripple lipper on top she out of cheats river big horn cruise. black head and wound up tight lol take care and if you have a web site would be interested in checking it out thanks

That is a really nice site and you have some beautiful dogs too! I like how they are bred! I hunted with allot of the dogs in your Old Moneys pedegree, I knew Burt Moore well the guy who owned Moores dogs in your dogs papers, he also owned Moores Racoon Betsy. When I was a kid I would go with him cause he got too old to go get the dogs.

If i was goin' to get a walker i would try to find a double clover and my uncle says if he ever hada walker again he would have a double clover. My dad has a double clover breed dog and he is
9-10 years old and still treein' likea pup.

T walker strains

Where I live it gets cold & I have to hunt in cold weather alot.Also I built this strain for hunting lions & bobcat.which they are quit successful at .I need a dog that can grub atrack if there is nothing else to run but smart enough to drift fast and pick up faster and tree it and stay treed .The blood line I favor for tracking is Finly river that still tracks some line have lost some tracking ability because of compition hunting .So I find you have to hunt with other dog I want to fit into my blood line to make sure I don't lose nose on the dogs .Also I want brains & treeing abiltiy Moundo line is in a earlier part of my bloodline for treeing .Mike Dohoany builds good track & tree dogs also plus I like great looking dogs .I lucky my old Hank dog has it all and he is putting it in his pups & the females I use for breeding I alway raise & train There lines must match my lines .they are Finly River line ,Majors Bandit lines and Hansome Hank lines all 3 females are track and tree dogs .thats why I like my line of dogs because aI built it for my needs.

Riverbend Flag and Bozo or his sons like Nite Heat ,Coma,Clover bred to Finley River and Lone Pine females.Let's not forget Spring Creek Rock,without him there would be no Dohoney or Nite Heat.

I like the Stylish Queen and Finley River blood. It has always been real nice to our family and we have just crossed out on the Hardwood Bozo blood, by breeding to a dog down in North Carolina named Laurel Creek Stylish Bozo.

I apologize for the length of the following post. I bought the Money hound that Maverick mentions, as a pup from Newt Uplinger. I used to terrorize Mr. Uplinger about her ability to tree bobcats. The majority of my bloodline comes from Rick Emerson. Rick sent me out his Hank dog's grandmother, Maggy as well as Hank's uncle Dual Grand Black Powder Hawken. And... the best cat dog that I have ever owned, Hank's sister, NiteCH GRCH Western Loose Change. Money Was Shaffer's Training Facility female of the year and threw a large number of big game hounds. However, Loose Change has had a bigger impact on the breed. NITECH GRCH Kalal's Destiny in the Wind, NITECHCH GRCH Cascade Mountain Western Swing, Dual GRCH Western Black Powder Keg to name a few. Two Of Keg's littermates are in Idaho and both are producing tremendous cat dogs. I run big game as well as raccoon and I also pack hunt. On tough cat tracks, Loose Change would be way out in front followed by Maggie, Hawk and then Money. Money was all heart and drive, but she was not equal in nose or athleticism to the other three. Again, you picked Money up at the tree-she would not quit a track. Loose Change and to some extent her mother Maggy ran the wind and were death on both bobcat and mountain lion. Hawk was more in his element as a coon dog and he was a lay up specialist. I crossed Hawk on a Don Holum bred female, Tree Spirit, (Finley River X House) To get Keith Durkee's excellent hound,CH GRNITE CH Proud Rummy and Crossed Rummy with Loose Change to produce Dual Grand Western Black Powder Keg as well as his littermates. ( If any one other than Keith Durkee owned Rummy and let him run big game consistently ... who knows?) Sadly, Money, Loose Change, Maggy and Hawk are only alive now in our memories. Over the past thirty years, the best hounds that I have followed had both Finley River ahd House breeding in their pedigrees. Currently I co-own a dual champion male that is out of Money and a quadruple Grand Ch male out of Hawk. But... I have two young females ( less than a year old) that go back to Rick Emerson's Hank dog who will make their mark.

Spring Creek Radar female crossed with Crowding Billy produced the best hound i've ever hooked a lead to.
