I may actually have 3 litters this year. After almost 3 years with none and I didn't stoop to drugs.. used my gut feeling, only thing I changed was dog food.. too many chemicals in the best food. Old school is the way to go!!

Sammie is showing. Definitely carrying pups. Her first litter and she just turned 5!!! Thank goodness for my gut feeling!! Now, hoping Jane starts showing!

Dog food

I just switched back to the sport mix blue bag myself after pro plan jumped their price up 7.50 on the 31.1 lb. Bag. However sport mix used to make the exact same ingredients in a LARGE chunk rather than the tiny kibble that's in the blue bag. Problem is I can't find it anywhere. Also can't find a contact number for sport mix either. Does ANYONE know if they still make the large kibble?? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

I have been feeding K-9 RAGE OR VALU-PAK BLACK BAG ALL MEAT BASED. good results My buddy and I have raised 3 litters in the last 8 years, 11 live pups born in each. Gyps raised 11, 10 , 11 respectively. No problems so far.

With research that has been done. Where does Sportmix fall out in causing problems. I feed the Valupak black bag and most dogs look good on it but my buddies do not. Wish I could explain that.

Watch for chemicals that replace iodine. When they take corn and grain out, they are natural iodine sources. I believe many dog food over compensate.
Potassium iodide is used as a suppliment Butt that chemical is also used as a medication to control hyperthyroidism. Several dog foods use, kelp, fish oil, calcium iodate, and others together to compensate. 1 dog food listed their iodine at 2.33mg per lb. Stating any extra would be expelled by urine. Dr. Hollada on this board has stated .75 mg per lb is ideal.
Too much iodine will actually shut down the thyroid and when that happens, also affects the adrenal gland. Both essential in the reproducing cycle. Dogs systems are seemingly more sensitive to chemicals over natural food.
A few have stated that they believe it is the GMO in dog food. Which is also possible. Since we never had this rash of problems years ago before they started to "improve" our dog food. Again, GMO, is not natural foods...
I am no Vet, but these are my theories and so far they have worked. I know several telling me the same thing. I know personally, a couple people who followed this advice and got puppies when they hadn't for years. Some took a year, some the very next heat cycle.
Some of the people that had "not so nice comments" ended up loosing entire litters, or mother's producing no milk. This post here seems that people are just listening instead of making fun. Remember 17,000 views and 289 comments on the first post. Over a year, a couple hundred phone calls and PM's following what is going on and others having the same results.
Remember, my ideas are just theories, gut feelings, and guesses... But they have worked. I can only explain what I have witnessed with my own eyes.

I thought meat meal, and fish meal where bad ingredients. What am I missing here?

Meat meal is not the greatest, and hard not to find some in dog food. But this food is not meat meal based. And fish meal also is not bad as long as there is not alot of iodine suppliment already added. When you have fish meal, kelp, potassium iodide, salt, fish oil, omegas all added, it is too much.

short cycle to no cycle

I sure thank You all for posting opinions and possible solutions to dogs and heat cycles. I too have experienced these same issues ie:short cycles, no milk, no cycles at all.

I currently have a 32.9 month old female that has never ran a heat cycle. After reading many discussions and comments last summer, I decided to try my own experiment . I too had been feeding this particular brand of dog food from inception in the womb until last August/September. My female at that time was 25/26 months old and had never ran a heat cycle.

I took her off this feed that I like very well, and put her on Pride dog food. I fed that till mid February of this year. About mid February I switched to the Sportmix as some had suggested, rather than go back to the feed that I like very well. On March 30th, My female ( 8 days shy of 33 months ) began swelling, and is now in a full blown heat cycle.

I have no scientific reason to explain why this occurred, but can only say she has been off this particular dog food for approximately 7 months and is just now having her 1st heat cycle.

Thanks to all of you for having the courage to share your experiences. It is that very sharing that gave me the idea to at least give it a shot and see what happens. Was this a coincidence? Maybe, but could it also be connected to something else that may be going on with our dog foods? Quite possible. I don't know the answer, I only know my results. Thanks for reading and good luck to any/all who are having same or similar issues!!

I just had a phone call from a Rottweiler breeder in Texas. She did NOT feed the dog food in question that I had problems with, but a very expensive grain free food. I asked her to send a pic of ingredients. First I noticed Potassium iodide.... Then fish meal, salmon, smelt, salt, calcium iodate... Her females were encountering very short heat cycles. I told her what my suspicions were and she stated it started about a year after she went to this food.... Hmmmmm.. alot like myself and Pat Bizich have been saying.
On a better note, Jane is due May 5th and is as big as a house. I am so happy. And Sammie is is able to take care of all 13 pups, but we will start to suppliment feedings as they grow bigger.

It works by shrinking the size of the thyroid gland and decreasing the amount of thyroid hormones produced.

WOW!

You would be AMAZED at the dog food that uses it. I counted 15 name brands ... And loading up on Iodine. Proof, 3 years, no normal heat cycles, no puppies... Now, 15 months later....

I don't mind. I feed Sportmix high energy mini chunks. Not perfect ingredients, but basically not chemical additives for iodine. My close friend feeds High Standard. Both at 26/18. Old school, both having corn. Although I dislike meat meal (due to not illegal to use euthanized animals as filler) very hard to not find a little in dog food.
