Question

What would be a reason for a club to have a double header hunt and dl is 8 and 12, and make dl to return cards at 10 or 10:30? Also has Ukc put a rule that a 1hr/2hr hunt has to be a minimum of 4 hours to return. Example:1hr hunt= 4hrs and no less of dl

There is no rule at UKC on required time between deadlines. All deadline times are set by the club officer at time of hunt confirmation.

Chris, like Trevor stated it is up to club, I've done them here at my club and I know mistake I made was the intitial entry deadline (forgot about the daylight time. However it should be in clubs best interest to give plenty of time to return. I hope I learned and will never make my second deadline before 1am. I did however give guys option of pre-entering the second round before they left 1st round.

Thanks. I just thought it was a bit weird for a club to have a 8 and 12 dl to enter and make dl the other night at 10.00. Not only you hope to not call timeout you put yourself in a rush just to go back and set 2 hours .

Who knows why, it makes me wonder if the club you speak of only give their hunters an hour of traveling and dog gathering time for a regular 2hr hunt, much less if they called timeout. Most hunt directors or MOH ask the cast going the farthest what kind of deadline they need. I personally make my early round deadlines just before the late round deadline. In the other kc we make them the same time.

Back in February I remember seeing a DH down in Oklahoma that had hunt sign up deadlines of 7 and 9. I was thinking whoever set this up has never hunted in one before! That would barely be enough time to call out cast drive to a close spot hunt an hour and drive back. Everything would have to go perfect for a cast to get back by the 2nd hunt. I think that for some it is just inexperience at DH and through a little trial and error most will figure it out.
Just a week or so ago some had asked about signing up and leaving instead of setting around and waiting on the late round hunt deadline to see if anyone new shows up. Another told them to draw out cast and wait, neither can be done. Again inexperience in how these things function. Anyone that has attended very many know that most of the time it's the same hunters in both but there are many times that someone who couldn't make it early come late. We have 2 at our club who is more likely to make it to the late because of work or other family obligations.
Most on the side of the world where they have been doing these thing for years and years late winter hunts are 7 and 11, 8 and 12 in fall and spring, 9 and 1 in the summertime. This is dependent upon time zone and when the time changes but there is almost always 4 hrs between. Most of the time they don't need it but in the summer when it's not getting dark till after 9:30 here there are times when they barely make it back and aren't hunting far from the club.

I’ve seen some shady stuff coming from this club. I think most in the club don’t know any better because there learning, and the one or 2 that does are a bit shady

Our rule of thumb for a two hour hunt is 6 hours from deadline to return...would think a one hour would be 3

Think this way you are hunting one less hour but it is still going to take the same amount of time to drive to the spot and back again. It is still going to take the same amount of time to gather dogs when it's over.

One thing to consider, I have seen where someone asked if they could draw casts because all casts were back by 12 but late deadline was 1. Make your late deadlines 12 and have guys hunting in the first round enter there dogs for the second round before they go hunting early. You can draw them out at 12 and these hunters have 1hr to get back from hunting after draw out before they are scratched. That way if everyone is back early they don't need to set around and wait till 1. they can get out there right after 12.

Re-read your post. It reads that you are suggesting drawing cast an hour early and putting the hour on those that previously signed up. In speaking/writing deadline the way it is written myself and I'm sure shadinc thought you meant the deadline to return the scorecards. It wasn't until you made a post on the other thread that I figured out you were suggesting making the advertised hunt sign up deadline earlier and putting the hour on those who weren't back but had previously signed up.
