Dog hanging up on bad tracks an hesitant to tree

I have a bluetick that just turned 2 year old. He can strike an tree his own coon long as its a good track. Where he struggles is if he strikes a older track or strikes one thats in a ruffer territory it will hang him up an hes more hesitant to tree. Is this something that he will over come in time? He's also only had a couple of coons knocked out to him in his life

Personally, I believe that is something that can be over come with time, patience and experience. If your willing to let him learn, keep at it, even when it's frustrating.

I had a great female one time that was the same way. She finished to GRNITECH.

When he runs a good track, how does he run it? What’s his style? Does he move it well? Does he drift it? Does he run it like he’s trying to catch it with his head up or is he just following along like he’s searching for every place the coon put a foot down?

Good track dogs are born just like good tree dogs are. They need to hone their inherited traits through time in the woods but you can usually get a good idea of what you’ve got to work with within the first dozen or so coons they run if your running them solo.

Everyone that I know is having a bunch of this around here now. That is the ones that will admit it.

Dog

What you are describing does not sound like a major problem with a dog this age and experience level. I would much rather have a dog that hesitates to tree than a dog that just grabs a tree. You will have a more accurate tree dog with one that operates like your dog is operating now. Just keep hunting and let this dog gain confidence, nothing beats time in the woods, there is no substitute for experience. Nothing worse than a tree grabbing dog that trees on a track they can not move, sounds like your dog has a brain. Dave

I'd personally rather him to do his best to make sure. Some Blueticks have a colder than average nose. Be glad when tracking gets tough, he doesn't just hang the first tree he comes to when he comes to a bad spot.. If you get too upset, let me know. He just turned 2. I would take him off your hands..

Sounds like you have an eye for talent as well, I would much rather have a dog doing this than just treeing. Experience will certainly help this young dog if he is given the chance to progress at his own level and not " trained" on to much. My buddy is hunting a top dog now that acted a lot like this dog at that age, don't get any better than he is today. A dog with a nose and a brain just needs hunted and they WILL get better. Dave
